Eleven years after the train fire at
Godhra — an incident which changed Gujarat forever — inspiring instances of
communal harmony can still be found. Hussain Saiyed, whose life is a study in
humanity, is one such inspiring example, though this 84-year-old former teacher
of science and math at Anjum Islamic High School in Astodia is reluctant to talk
about himself. He says he has not done anything great.
About 30 years back, Saiyed and his sister informally ‘adopted’ their Hindu neighbour’s daughter, Asmita Jhala, who was then just a three-year-old child constantly finding herself in the middle of fights between her parents. Since then they have looked after her like their own child with Asmita living with them.

Despite living in a Muslim household, Asmita follows her religion. “She is a firm believer and our different religions have never interfered in our lives,” said Saiyed.

The Saiyeds have, since then, taken care of all the expenses of Asmita, even visiting hundreds of doctors whenever she was ill. Noorjahan shows the newly-constructed kitchen stand and says that it was made at Asmita’s insistence.
“She loves shopping, particularly for clothes and shoes, and whenever she wants something she will harass me until I give in,” said Noorjahan with a laugh.many of our customers are stepping beyond short sleeve authenticguccishoes and giving their supporters. When asked about the 2002 riots, he said those were indeed horrific times but it didn’t affect his relations with either his loving daughter or his neighbours.
