Research has demonstrated that training runs that emphasize speed, even sprinting, is a good method for improving efficient form in running.

The difference in watching the slower runners approach the finish line is how much better they run when they are trying to run faster. The body becomes more upright, the knees come forward higher, the feet tend to straighten out and not flare out to the side as much and the arms pump harder. It is impossible to sprint a 5K race, even for the first place runners, but more efficient form over the course can be achieved and along with that more efficient form comes a faster overall time.
