Puma pushes case for green shoes

Puma has called for an end to what it says are “antiquated” and outdated import duties on synthetic materials that make it more expensive for companies to switch to making greener shoes and clothing.

The sportswear company, whose shoes adorn the feet of athletic stars such as Jamaican Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt,Read Mens watchreplica eBay Review and Guides in the eBay categories. unveiled internal research on Monday showing the environmental impact of making its conventional suede sports shoe was nearly one-third higher than for a cotton and linen alternative that has no leather and a biodegradable plastic sole.

But the greener shoe’s 95 retail price was 10 higher than the suede sneaker, Puma said, partly because import duties on the biodegradable plastic used in it were much higher than for less environmentally friendly leather.

If Puma stopped using leather in its main suede footwear range in favour of a more sustainable recycled material, it would face extra costs of at least 3.4m a year in duty rates, the company said. That is an “illogical punishment” said Jochen Zeitz, Puma chairman, who caused a stir in June when he told the Financial Times the high environmental impact of leather, which requires large amounts of cleared land and water, meant Puma would eventually look at phasing it out. “We and our entire industry are working with an outdated system that has roadblocks in place preventing us from becoming more sustainable,” Mr Zeitz said.

“We know that synthetic materials can have far less impact on the environment than, say, leather. Yet instead of encouraging companies to use more sustainable materials in their products to mitigate their environmental impacts,Nothing flatters the foot like a beautifully made sandalguccishoes. governments continue to have antiquated incentives in place such as import duties on synthetic material that are much higher than those placed on leather, regardless of the environmental footprint.”

Franz Koch,Buynikeshoesat Great Prices. Puma chief executive, said import duties on leather were about 3 per cent worldwide, while those on synthetic materials ranged from 20-37 per cent.
