Want to get faster at the end of races?

San Marcos runners have been fortunate to have several races the past few weekends right here in the city.

And in November there will a few more for local runners.

There are a couple in November that celebrate Thanksgiving and I know the Thankful Turkey 5K always draws a good showing of faster runners, because the awards are turkeys and hams for the big meal that week.

Having been at the finish line for many of the races over the years, it is always interesting to watch how runners manage to find speed over the last few yards of the race. Research has demonstrated that training runs that emphasize speed, even sprinting, is a good method for improving efficient form in running.

The difference in watching the slower runners approach the finish line is how much better they run when they are trying to run faster. The body becomes more upright, the knees come forward higher, the feet tend to straighten out and not flare out to the side as much and the arms pump harder. It is impossible to sprint a 5K race, even for the first place runners, but more efficient form over the course can be achieved and along with that more efficient form comes a faster overall time.

One of the easiest methods to practice this finishing kick is to do it during a training run.

Remember that running faster during a race is not the same as running a 100-meter dash. Runners in the 100 meters dash start out fast and continue to run all out for the entire distance. In a 5K, or 10K distance, there is no need for an all out sprint start.

The gradual build up to a faster pace is more the norm for a long distance race. It is easy to practice this gradual build up to a fast sprint on a track but can be done anywhere.

On a track, use the long straight away section for the build up to a sprint. As you round the curve of the track start to run a little faster. Run approximately 10 yards and then try to go a little faster. Another 10 yards and repeat the process of going a little faster. This can be done for about four times, or roughly 40 yards, when full speed is reached. For the remaining 60 yards try to hold that speed to the start of the next curve.

This gradual build up to sprint speed can be done every lap, or even every other lap, during the training run.

One of the key points for the runner trying to reach full speed is to be aware of the form that is being used while running at a fast speed in comparison to the slow speed that is used during the rest of the run.

Good form can be used while running slow, the same form that is used when a runner is running fast. Good form is better for all speeds and makes the so-called “slow” speeds faster, just because of better form.
