After recording continuous incidents
of chain snatching in different parts of the city, Pune police have once again
decided to use decoys to nab chain snatchers, even though the last time they
used this plan, it ended in failure.
The decision to do so came after city cops have been registering four-five incidents of chainsnatching daily since May 1.
Last year, the police experimented with early shifts for constables to senior police inspectors that began at 6 am and also enlisted the help of staff from the Special Branch and Traffic Branch to curb the menace, but unfortunately, nothing worked.
Now, despite their earlier plan having failed to yield results, the police have decided to use plain-clothes women constables wearing jewellery once again to trap chain snatchers.
A few male constables will follow these women and if their gold chains are snatched, the cops will pounce on the chain snatchers at once. The woman constables were supposed to wear sarees and imitation gold jewellery and pretend to be on their way to a function.
City Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol confirmed that the police had decided to work with decoys to trap chain snatchers. He said that the scheme will be implemented at the police station level and women constables of these police stations will be decoys.
In November 2012, the same scheme was launched on the directions of Pol. However, it failed miserably as none of the traps ensnared any chain-snatchers. In February, Pol admitted that the scheme had failed and decided to put an end to it.
