Sunny Glassberg, who died this week at age 94, was a onetime buyer at a department store who went on to become a philanthropist. One of her best-known projects had its origin in the turtles her young children brought home from trips to the country.

Years after the turtles were gone and her children had grown, Mrs. Glassberg hired artist Bob Cassilly. He designed and sculpted three large, climbable concrete turtles, dubbed Dick, Tom and Sally for her children; and four smaller concrete turtles for each of her grandchildren.

The staff of the St. Louis Parks Department and Forest Park Forever helped Mrs. Glassberg identify the perfect spot, along the south side of Oakland Avenue, visible to passing motorists on Highway 40.

In August 1996, Turtle Park opened. Mrs. Glassberg visited it frequently. She called the turtles “symbols of peace.”

Mrs. Glassberg also was the major benefactor in the $1.1 million renovation of the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park. She called the restored pavilion a birthday gift to herself. She was 80 when the pavilion reopened in 1998.

Among her many other gifts, Mrs. Glassberg made a $2 million commitment in 2007 for an endowed professorship at Washington University to encourage research into renewable energy and sustainability.

Her other projects included the reforestation of Tower Grove Park, and gifts to the Scholarship Foundation. She recently helped the state and federal governments purchase 438 acres on the Meramec River, dedicated as the Myron and Sonya Glassberg Family Conservation Area.

Her many awards include the Greensfelder Medal from the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Older Women’s League’s Women of Worth Lifetime Achievement Award, the St. Louis Zoo Award and the Hiram W. Leffingwell Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her oldest son, Dr. Richard Glassberg, a veterinarian in Fullerton, Calif, remembers her reaction when he brought his pet pig, Jeanie, home from summer camp at age 15.

“Pigs are not allowed in Briarcliff,” she said of their neighborhood in Ladue. But she let her son keep the pig and even allowed Jeanie to hang out in the kitchen, where she cooked pancakes for the pet.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 11 at the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park. Her body will be cremated.

So this summer, lace up your hiking boots, clip in your mountain-biking shoes and go beyond Barr Trail to some of the peak's greatest 'secrets. '

In 1896, while Cripple Creek was booming with gold fever, speculators from the German National Bank of Cincinnati thought they had a good idea that gold could be found on the peak's east face. In the late 19th century, outfitters offered sunrise burro trips, in which tours camped at Mountain View until midnight and then headed along the train route to the summit to watch the sun rise over the plains. One contemporary likened the ride back down to Napoleon's retreat from Moscow, with riders so exhausted they barely could stay in the saddle.

To get there: Take the Cog or hike up Barr Trail, turning left on trail No. 671 just before reaching Barr Camp.

Some of the oldest trees in the region can be found on this shoulder of Pikes Peak.

The Cog runs past here - but doesn't stop - so you won't have total solitude, but the vast expanse of the peak's tundra is open for you to explore, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and other high peaks of the Rockies glittering in the distance.

Hurricane Canyon Research Natural Area

Hurricanes don't hit Colorado, but in the 1920s or 30s a wind storm struck the eastern foothills of the peak with enough force to blow down all the trees. The area has two canyons, with steep slopes, boulder-covered canyon bottoms and loose rocky soil.

It became a designated natural research area in 1931. Though it's less than a mile from U.S. Highway 24 west of Manitou Springs, few visit here for good reason.

Houdek describes the route up the canyon from the highway as hand-over-hand climbing, 1,000 feet in a quarter-mile, with drop-offs and caves ready to punish the misstep. But the rugged setting is worth it.

'You feel like you're deep in the Rocky Mountains even though you're in the foothills, ' he said.

Despite the name, this cirque below the summit does have a bottom, and if you make the effort to get there, you'll see a side of Pikes Peak that looks more like Longs Peak than the gentle mountain we know and love.

There are many snow-climbing routes running more than 2,000 feet to the summit, but they aren't for novices and are only climbable a couple of months a year. Use caution.

Thousands of people on the Pikes Peak Highway look down at the Bottomless Pit each year, but far fewer see this majestic cirque from below. In early summer, the ground is often a sea of wildflowers.

It's also one of the more haunted places on the peak. Early Colorado Springs lore tells of a Ute woman, murdered by a jealous suitor, whose cries can be heard here. Another legend says a miner fell in the pit and on stormy nights his ghost walked along the edge, warning people to stay away, with a lantern that could be seen for miles.

Sentinel Point: On the west flank of the peak, not visible from town, this pointy heap of boulders is actually the second-highest point in the Pikes Peak massif. Start at the trailhead for Horsethief Park along Colorado Highway 67, turn north on trail no. 708 and follow cairns to a ridge above timberline. Sentinel Point rises a short distance to the south. Get an early start as this route is very exposed if there are thunderstorms.

The Crater: Way off the beaten path, you'll have to bushwhack to reach this depression in the earth at 11,500 feet, south of Cabin Creek. Houdek suggests approaching it from higher on the mountain, as a faint trail climbs into the valley from near Windy Point.

A fantastic shuttle loop can be done from Cascade, through some of the peak's more scenic and unvisited terrain, and back down Barr Trail into Manitou Springs. Follow the Heizer Trail from Cascade to the top of Cascade Mountain, head into open meadows and turn right below Manitou Reservoir (a left turn would take you to Hurricane Canyon) and take trail no. 638 as it winds up and down secluded valleys before joining Barr Trail.

Nearly 50 stores have opened in the last 18 months, including a diverse mix of European luxury labels, contemporary brands and hipper American designers. There’s a concept store called Fivestory, at 18 East 69th Street, that carries cool lines like Visvim and specialized Nikes.

Meanwhile, longstanding tenants like Lanvin, Oscar de la Renta and Chanel are expanding, and other labels, Etro and Gucci among them, are spiffing up their existing stores.

There was a time, and not so long ago, when Madison Avenue, like much of the Upper East Side, would have resisted such changes, especially the arrival of stores like J. Crew, which now has, egad, four stores above 65th Street, and the younger shoppers who now cruise the contemporary blocks of shops like Intermix and Theory. This isn’t the meatpacking district.

“There is a new customer on Madison Avenue, and not just for our store,” said LeAnn Nealz, the president of Juicy Couture, which opened at 860 Madison Avenue in 2006, now facing Tom Ford and separated from Celine by Laduree macarons and Chrome Hearts glitzy sunglasses. Ms. Nealz has lived on the Upper East Side for 25 years, and remembers when the fancy fabric store Pierre Deux was on the block.

It was the bacon and eggs at Gardenia Cafe and Restaurant, a Greek diner at 797 Madison Avenue, that was a sort of madeleine for Tory Burch, who now lives in a town house a few blocks away. Back when she was just “a Philadelphia farm girl,” as she said, driving into the city with her mother, the first destination was Madison Avenue to look at the window displays.

“It was somewhat of an institution,” Ms. Burch said.

EVERY six months, Jim Leniart, the owner and creator of Red Maps, a series of foldout guides to major shopping destinations, updates a map of Midtown that includes every store along Madison Avenue up to 79th Street. Taking a taxi up the avenue the other day, Mr. Leniart observed that there was not even a dry spot anymore. This was curious in a slow-moving economy, and at a time when retail sales have been shaky at best.

“Nowhere else is there this kind of concentration of stores,” Mr. Leniart said, noting that between 60th and 78th Streets, or roughly one mile, there are 82 designer-clothing boutiques, 34 high-end jewelry stores and 34 stores specializing in categories like shoes, handbags or eyewear. “I have to believe that wealth is a factor.”

And Madison Avenue, at its core, is a local shopping district for a neighborhood that has one of the densest concentrations of wealthy residents in the world. Matthew A. But the reality is that their customers live uptown, and as Mr. Hernandez told Women’s Wear Daily, Madison Avenue “just seems kind of big league.”

The store, small at 2,000 square feet, sticks out like a sore pinkie, with displays of handbags set amid large cactuses and eerily dark walls. On a recent afternoon, two young customers were examining the bags with a delight approaching the indecent. And they were men.

Since major designers saw the recession as an opportunity to reinvest on the street — notably Ralph Lauren, who in 2010 opened a new flagship at 72nd Street to rival his existing flagship in the Rhinelander Mansion on the other side of the street — there are surprisingly few vacant spaces. In 2009, there were more than two dozen vacancies and another two dozen tenants looking to break their leases. Now new stores are coming from Pucci, Yigal Azrouel, Kate Spade, Belstaff and Brian Atwood.

“They think I’m a bakery!” said Faith Hope Consolo, the chairman of the retail group of Douglas Elliman. “Designers call from Europe and Asia, and they all ask me, ‘Is there a building available on Madison Avenue?’ ”

It will not come as a surprise that landlords once again are asking for rents of $1,500 a square foot, higher than before the recession. Nor that the Madison Avenue BID, which tracks store openings from 57th to 86th Streets, announced in July that “Madison Avenue Welcomes Twenty New Stores in the First Half of 2012.” Nor that, as a result of the arrival of more brands that can afford those rents, Madison Avenue could begin to look like every other street of luxury shops on the planet.
