Kickstarter projects generate millions

In April, three-person startup Pebble Technology sought to raise $100,000 to make 1,000 wristwatches that can be programmed with different clock faces. Donors on Kickstarter showered them with more than 100 times that amount: $10.3 million. It would have gone higher had Pebble not put a cap on contributions and ended the fundraising early.

They set a fixed duration for their fundraising, from one to 60 days, and a dollar goal for contributions. Anyone can contribute. If the goal isn’t reached by the deadline, the money goes back to the contributors and the project is canceled.

Migicovsky, the Pebble founder, is based in Silicon Valley, where venture capital runs in rivers. He got some funding from “angel investors” — wealthy individuals — early on and produced a small run of watches last year. But to realize his vision of a programmable watch that only needs to be charged once a week, he needed more money. They’re used to backing Web and software projects but are apprehensive about hardware, he says.

“You want to spend your time talking to customers. You don’t really want to spend your time talking to venture capitalists. Because at the end of the day, they’re just guys with money,” Migicovsky says.

The success of Pebble and others is clearly attracting more ambitious projects. A Los Angeles-based startup, Ouya, is collecting money to create a game console. It set a $950,000 minimum — reflecting the complexity of competing against the PlayStation, Xbox and Wii — and hit $8.6 million in pledges.

“For the first time, there’s a way to get customer feedback with money attached to it,” he said.

While entrepreneurs revel in the attention they get from donors on the website, Kickstarter’s founders are uncomfortable with the site’s role as a fundraising tool for products. The company wouldn’t comment for this story, and it doesn’t release financial data to the public because it’s a private company.

In past interviews, co-founder Yancey Strickler has suggested that Kickstarter wasn’t intended to be an engine of commerce or a route to riches.

“There is this greater idea of helping people out and that art still has value in the world,” he told board-game blog Purple Pawn earlier this year. “We generally don’t like Kickstarter to be used to, say, start a business.”

Of course, several Kickstarter projects have turned into businesses, like ElevationLab, the Portland Ore.-based startup that makes the Elevation iPhone docking station and Touchfire, a company in Redmond, Wash., that created a keyboard for the iPad.

The majority of Kickstarter projects are still non-commercial ventures like photo books and amateur musicals. At this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, 33 films, or 10 percent of the lineup, were funded through Kickstarter.

Kickstarter’s focus on artistic and creative pursuits to the exclusion of others might make it vulnerable to competition. Sam Gordon, who funded his “Brydge” keyboard for the iPad through the site, says Kickstarter needs to clearly define its guidelines for product development.

“If they don’t, then there’s room for other sites,” Gordon said.

Business and technology consultant Scott Steinberg, who has written a guide to crowdfunding, says it’s inevitable that commercialism would seep into it as the phenomenon grows.

“Crowdfunding is almost in the pre-K phase, and it’s about to grow up very fast here, and become more complex,” he says. “Inevitably, more businesses and profit-minded organizations are going to gravitate there.”

For the time being, Steinberg thinks crowdfunding will be dominated by products whose appeal is easily communicated visually, like the Pebble watch, or products aimed at fans of existing creators or products, like Burlew’s “Order of the Stick” comic.

Burlew says he believes it was crucial to have a core base of fans. His “Dungeons & Dragons”-themed Web comic has been running for eight years, and has supported Burlew and his family for most of that run.

"The Threepenny Opera" is a first for James Haffner, Chris Mackey and Tess Waters. For Hannah Ludwig, not so much.

Mackey's making his debut in a leading singing/speaking role. Waters never has portrayed a prostitute. For Ludwig, it's No. 4.

That's because Mackey and 38 fellow actors and musicians are staging "The Threepenny Opera," a 1938 collaboration by Germany's Weill and lyricist Bertolt Brecht, four times tonight through Sunday at the Long Theatre on Pacific's Stockton campus.

"The music is timeless, and it's still relevant today," said Haffner, 40, assistant professor of voice and director of opera at Pacific.

"There are a few very poignant lines," said Mackey, a baritone who plays Macheath, an evil antihero. "It's really a commentary on the poor and how it's, 'First comes the feeding. Then the moral code' (paying the rent)."

It's always a moral dilemma for Jenny Diver, a spurned prostitute.

"She has a lot of conflicts," said Waters, 22, a senior music major who's sharing the role with Ludwig. "She's in love with Macheath and is incredibly jealous. She's just all messed up."

"It's been a challenge trying to get into that dark mood of hatred and betrayal," said Ludwig, 19, a freshman voice student from Sacramento's West Campus High School.coogi jeans was founded in 1969 by Jacky Taranto of Melbourne, Australia. "It's fun, though."

Ludwig, a mezzo-soprano, should know. She's portrayed prostitutes-mistresses in "Othello," "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Twelfth Night."

It's very dark and definitely exposes the idea that society can't live by morals. It exposes, almost too realistically, situations in life that are dark, very violent and very sketchy."

Like Ludwig, neither Mackey - whose friends tease him about his character's similar-sounding name - nor Waters had seen the musical.

Originally set in London, it's a dark, risqué - "definitely PG-13," Haffner said - commentary on European social decline and decadence, and political discourse (communism vs. socialism) between the two world wars (1919-39).

It's introduced as an "opera for beggars."

Haffner, fluent in German, studied and researched the Brecht-Weill work in Berlin. He chose a 1989 translation by Michael Feingold.

Haffner shifted the locale to the Berlin Wall and picked '60s fashion ("miniskirts, knee-high boots, heavy eye makeup") and attitude.

The three-hour production's clever, ironic - also raunchy - dialogue and lyrics are mixed with angular, discordant sonic structures that require just eight musicians.It seems that jordan 6 rings in coming up for almost everyone including boys and girls.

Macheath has his own thing going.

"He has to carry the show," Haffner said. "He's handling it really well."

So are Waters and Ludwig.

"It's a very difficult role," Haffner said of Jenny, a former lover of Macheath's who takes a bribe and turns him in to the police. "Both are really exceptional."

"There's definitely a lot more in it than I thought," said Waters, a soprano from Kokomo, Ind., who also sings jazz. "At first, I really didn't like it all. Once I got involved and analyzed it, I really like it. The music was a little abrasive at first. Now I love the songs."

Haffner certainly enjoys that.

Milan fashion both retro and futuristic

As Milan's fashion week wound up, some themes for next winter have become apparent.

Feathers will be big, colors bold, buttons oversized and sequins everywhere. There's a slight couture feel to the collections, which somehow manage to be both retro and futuristic at the same time.

This certainly isn't the first time the duo has trotted out man-tailored looks for women, but for this collection they called in tailors to cut the clothes just right. The novelty came in the cutoff sleeves for suit jackets and coats, turning them into elegant vests.

Accessories, too, kept things separate. Shoes were lace-ups in tiger prints, sequins or colored calf for the boy part, while high-heeled pumps and slingbacks decorated with lace and embroidery belonged to the girlie side. Funky derby hats and suspenders lent a masculine touch, in contrast with ultra-feminine star studded earrings and necklaces sparkling with rhinestones.

The myriad of brightly colored sequins and embroidered jewels, which lit up the Dolce&Gabbana evening wear, evoked the fantasy world of a circus.

MISSONI

Missoni has created a dreamlike pastel world for next fall and winter, but has rooted it in reality with edgy leather accessories.

The collection presented Sunday during Milan fashion week is a fantastical flow of color, pinks into coral into salmon, yellow into blue into purple.

Marni's asymmetrical hemlines give the look a futuristic feel. For example, the hemline on a long jacket elongates in the back, giving an almost bell-like effect over a straight dress in a matching geometric print that stops just below the knee. The fabric is a dense, double-faced wool crepe.

The look is at times layered, with a fur under a leather jacket, giving just a knee-level peek of a sequined evening dress in black with blue stripes. She also includes capes, one dark with matching pants, and providing glimpses of a black-and-white patterned shirt.

Sleeveless dresses and short-sleeved coats are paired with industrial-size leather gloves, trimmed often with fur. The look is finished with shoes on thick wooden platforms and oversized deco jewelry emphasizing both shape and color.

BIAGIOTTI

Laura Biagiotti has always been a big fan of her native Italy.

So it was no surprise — particularly this year when Italy celebrates 150 years as a nation — that she came out on the runway wrapped in a cashmere shawl woven in the red, white and green colors of the Italian flag.

The shawl was not created for the anniversary, but is an item the globe-trotting Biagiotti has been carrying with her for the past twenty years.
