The opening of Resident Evil: Retribution has everything backwards. No, literally, for the opening title sequence, writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson presents the events in reverse and in slow motion and in glorious 3D. It is a bizarrely beautiful sequence to watch, reducing the narrative to a series of inventive and evocative images. Then, after a brief recap of the first four films, the scene is shown again, this time in forward motion and at full speed. Somehow, it isn’t nearly as interesting or visceral as it was in reverse. This is pretty indicative of the rest of the film, which plays loose with the narrative, playing mind games with Alice, each and every other character, and the audience. The film is full of action filled set pieces and over the top Resident Evil zombie gruesome effects. But it lacks any story what so ever; instead,Order high quality authenticmonclerjackets at home. For those who have been following the series, Resident Evil: Retribution picks up immediately after the ending of Resident Evil: Afterlife left off in 2010 with Alice, Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield, K-Mart (yup, that’s the character’s name) and a gaggle of “survivors” on the deck of Arcadia facing an oncoming fleet of Umbrella helicopters. But, all this matters little. When Alice (Milla Jovovich) is knocked unconscious, she awakens safe and sound in an American suburban home with Oded Fehr returning as her husband and young Aryana Engineer appearing as her daughter. Before she can figure anything out, Alice and her new family are attached by a horde of zombies much like the opening of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake. When this scenario plays out its course, Alice awakens once again, this time in a containment center in an Umbrella facility hidden deep underground being interrogated by her one time friend, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory). From here on out, Resident Evil: Retribution is an escape film where Alice must break out of Umbrella and return to the surface to save the world. The plot digresses to a formulaic video game contrivance of moving from one set piece to another, level to level, complete with hidden weapons, recurring allies, maps and zombies of every type. The film completely rests on the shoulders of its lead character Alice.
By now, Milla Jovovich has the character of Alice down and still looks as amazing as she ever has. She is an unparalleled action star in the hands of her husband, director Paul W.S. Anderson. She is cool, confident and sexy. However, its basically the same character as in all the previous films – very little has changed. In fact, the continual rebooting and playful tone to the narrative instantly dissolves and disseminates any attempt she tries at giving the character any depth. She is provided a bit of a spin ato her character in the script as Alice grows an attachment to the young child, Becky, who is her child in the Suburbia sequence and reappears later. She puts on her best Sigourney Weaver as the plot begins to mirror Aliens even more so than the Suburbia scenes ape Dawn of the Dead. It serves the story and progression of plot but carries too little weight to build the character of Alice, especially as she so callously watches each of her other friends perish one by one. But isn’t that really what a Resident Evil film is about? No, it’s the action and Jovovich delivers. She looks amazing with her wire-fu antics, crazy gun slinging and gravity defying leaps. In this department, she’s at the top of her game.
Milla isn’t the only heroine (or villainess) in Resident Evil: Retribution. She is joined by Li Bingbing (as Ada Wong) and returning cast members Sienna Guillory (as Jill Valentine) and Michelle Rodriguez (as Rain Ocampo). Li Bingbing is a fantastic Kato to Milla’s Green Hornet. Their fight against two giant Axemen zombies in a simulated New York City is a highlight of the film. The film works hard to best a similar scene in the last installment where Ali Larter stood by Alice’s side. However, here, Li brings a quiet intelligence to her role; she may be the only character that displays any resemblance of something going on inside their noggin. Michelle Rodriguez returns as two different cloned versions of Rain last seen in the first Resident Evil. She plays both good and evil sides of the character and gets some of the choicer lines and character moments bordering on clever. In one scene she’s a wimpy suburbanite; in the next, she is a hardened bad-ass that takes on the entire surviving cast in the climatic battle. Everyone fairs better than Sienna Guillory as a cyber-controlled pawn of the Umbrella Corporation. Her delivery is laughably bad and nearly impossible to endure. Even when she is standing completely still firing a pair of pistols,The Design Museum presents iconic French shoe designer guccimenshoes, she is terrible. She never has the presence the character needs to be utilized by The Red Queen as head of security, nor is she convincing as one who could lead an army of Storm Trooper wannabes. It is so comical that it threatens the entire film, reducing much of it to cartoon like quality. Thankfully, her final battle with Alice is extraordinarily well choreographed and filmed, providing the character and the actress some redemption.
The guys fair about the same, in addition to Oded Fehr returning in what amounts to an extended cameo,offers louisvuittonshoes and Loafers for Men, Boris Kdojoe returns as Luther West, a lame attempt at a love interest for Alice. He brings the film its sole emotional core with his expression of affection for the lead character. He may be the only supporting character that has an ounce of motivation aside from taking orders. He plays off the other more militant characters and Alice, providing the film a much needed sense of humor. Johann Urb and Kevin Durand appear alonside Boris as Alice’s rescuers. Urb plays familiar Resident Evil game character Leon S. Kennedy and Durand portrays Barry Burton. Urb serves little more than to be the film’s Han Solo. Durand, however, gets to have a lot of fun playing a rare heroic role in his career of bad guys. He’s more the Malcolm Reynolds role.
As usual, most of the film’s budget can easily be seen in the specular special effects. From zombies to enormous monsters called “lickers” to Axmen to explosions, Resident Evil: Retribution lets loose with visual eye candy and breathtaking stunts. From the opening sets on the Arcadia to the simulated sets of New York, Tokyo and Moscow to the brilliant shot of hundreds of underwater Nazi zombies closing in on their drowning victim, the film looks amazing and that’s why many go to a Resident Evil film. Resident Evil: Retribution is the second film of the series to be in 3D, both directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. He has a real flair for the medium, providing vast landscapes, broad depth of field shots and many zings of object flying into the audience. He handles all the cues with a sure, balanced hand – balanced being the key word. The opening scene is worth the added price alone where the slow motion reverse shots are fascinating and exhilarating. The various cityscapes benefit from the added dimension as well, showing both the depth of the city itself and the boundaries of the simulation enclosures surrounding them. The signature tentacle-mouthed zombies are displayed in all their 3D glory as are the lickers and the Axemen. The 3D is highlighted in the opening helicopter assault and the underwater scenes. And, it doesn’t hurt to have Milla Jovovich in 3D either. The 3D may be film’s greatest redeeming value.
Resident Evil: Retribution is shallow and brain dead. It lacks emotion, conflict and meaning. It has no purpose. What it is is pure adrenaline, action and mayhem. And, it is damn fun. Great action, inventive set pieces, and plenty of video game gore, the film delivers a good time if nothing else. If judged simply on what it intends to deliver, the film is a home run; however, it so lacks a constructive narrative and any character development that is fails as a film. It may be one of the best examples of a video game translated to film, the characters act and behave as if they are in a video game and they run through a plot that would as easily have driven the next installment of the Resident Evil game. But it excels at the combat, the gun play, the explosions and the mutated ombies.

Live review: New York Dolls, O2 Academy, Newcastle
PERHAPS it was a coincidence that the Dolls chose Newcastle to kick off their current UK tour, but when they took the stage it was like they were returning to their spiritual home.
It is hardly surprising, considering they recorded their latest album, Dancing Backward In High Heels, at the city’s Blast studios, and played a few low-key warm-up gigs at The Cluny.
Originally formed in New York in 1971, the band drew their influences from the likes of the Stones, the Stooges and Bowie, and recorded two highly-influential studio albums before finally imploding in 1976.
However, their legacy was to influence a generation of punk and new wave artists on both sides of the Atlantic,As one of the famous apparel brands,ed hardy clothing are popular with many fashionistas with its tattoo design and unique styler. as well as hundreds of sleazy LA glam-metal bands throughout the 1980s.
But you can’t keep a good band down, and they reformed in 2004 for a reunion gig – shortly before the death of original bassist Arthur Kane – long after most of the bands they had influenced had disappeared into rock history.
They launched straight into Looking For A Kiss from their 1973 self-titled debut album.
Despite being older, wiser, and craggier, they still managed to make it sound as fresh as it did back then.

Earl looked every inch the elegantly-wasted rocker, complete with dark shades and spiky hair, and could still show younger guitar-slingers a thing or two.
For me the highlights were the classic 1970s tracks because I had waited so long to hear them live.
Trash saw Slick torturing his guitar with a swirl of feedback and pure essence of rock ‘n’ roll.
At one point a disgruntled punter ranted that it was self-indulgent rubbish – or words to that effect – but on the whole they won the crowd over.
You have to make allowances for age, but they managed to rock with a youthful energy and performed songs old and new with panache.
They wound up with a classic version of Personality Crisis before taking a bow to a recording of Baby I Love You.
I left with my ears ringing and a smile on my face.

Grant to Benefit Historical Society's Clothing and Textile Collection
The Monroe Historical Society recently received a $7,500 Heritage Revitalization Fund Implementation grant from the Connecticut Humanities Council. The fund offers grants for projects focusing on Connecticut history and the organizations that preserve and present it to the public.
The Monroe Historical Society plans to use the money for a pilot project to preserve its clothing and textile collection, one of the largest collections held by society.
“This collection is so rich in the varied stories of Monroe residents. It represents Monroe at work, at play, and at war” said MHS President Nancy Zorena. “We are pleased to partner with Vivian Lea Solek, a Curatorial & Collections Management Consultant with over 25 years experience in non-profit administration and collections management and care, to lead us in this project."

Winter doesn't freeze solar panel sales
It was brutal, but you feel like you conquered it once you get done with it," Eli Lopez says as he attaches piping on the side of an Oak Park home. "There's really nothing I can't handle now. I mean, Chicago's got some of the toughest weather in the country."
Lopez is warming up after spending much of the winter on the roof. As Solar Service Inc.'s newest technician, he's been with the solar panel installation company for eight months. On this particular day, the temperature is 43 degrees and the sun is out, so he wears only two long-sleeved shirts underneath the company t-shirt. A few weeks before, he and his co-workers, Matt Vester and Matthew Robert Bart, were wearing full-body thermals under their shirts and jeans, heavy-duty Carhart overalls, coats and ski masks.
Vester has been with the Niles, Ill., company for three and a half years, and he says he prefers working in the cold to the heat of summer. He tries to get away with as few layers as he can.
"I think it's pretty fun, actually," he says, and agrees with Lopez that he feels like he's "beating winter."
"Sometimes I bring them hot chocolate and cookies," says owner Brandon Leavitt. "But they're very hardy."
Leavitt says his company is as busy during the winter as it is in the summer, just like the solar panels it installs. Contrary to what you may think, solar panels work regardless of the air temperature, as long as the sun is out. It's a misconception Leavitt has been working hard to dispel for over 30 years.
"The idea of solar is like magic to some people," he says of Chicago residents. "But to us it is simple science. Sunshine is income falling out of the sky."
Leavitt first learned about this "simple science" from engineering luminary Buckminster Fuller, under whom he studied as a young man. Scrapping a career in music to learn from Fuller, Leavitt spent the mid-'70s in Florida, working with a company that prototyped solar equipment. He came back to Illinois, where he was raised, in 1977 to prove solar could work up north as well as it did down south. He started by installing solar panels on the roof of his parents' Lincolnwood home--the first solar installation in the state, he claims.
"The utility company called my dad to ask why the bills had dropped so dramatically," he chuckles.
Leavitt started Solar Service Inc. in a Niles storefront that same year, designing and installing solar thermal and photovoltaic systems for residential and commercial properties. Today it is the oldest full-service solar company in the United States, Leavitt says, employing 16 people and taking in about $3 million in sales last year.
Solar thermal panels collect heat from the sun and transfer it to a home's potable water system, where it can replace a gas water heater about 70 percent of the time, according to Leavitt. He says larger thermal systems can also replace 50 percent of a home's heating system, saving the average family $400 per year. One reason the systems work year-round is that most of the installation is under the roof, not on it.
Photovoltaic panels capture the sun's rays and convert it to electricity. The average installation of 16 panels can provide 40 percent of a home's electricity, which adds up to about $440 in savings per year.
The systems aren't cheap: Residential contracts average $14,000, and in states with mid-range utility rates like Illinois and Indiana, the pitch can be difficult.
"That's one of the tricky things," says Lisa Albrecht, a renewable energy specialist at Solar Service. "Whenever people are looking at solar, there's two sides to the equation. One is how much does it cost, and two is how much does it save me?"
Solar Service had an unexpected boon in 2006 when Al Gore released "An Inconvenient Truth," his critically acclaimed documentary about global climate change. Sales jumped 25 percent. But when the financial crisis hit in 2008—coinciding with a further drop in utility rates—residential business dropped by half, and has been slow to recover.
"We follow the same curve as general construction and new homes sales," Albrecht says.

Albrecht took classes online and in California, and volunteered at the Illinois Solar Energy Association when she met Leavitt. She has been with the company for almost four years.
But snowy revelations and "hardy" temperaments aside, sometimes winter still beats the Solar Service crew.

Trevor Bayne: Rookie on a roll
In one of the biggest upsets in NASCAR history, 20-year-old Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500 Sunday, making him the youngest winner in the 53-year history of NASCAR's Great American Race.
Bayne is too young to legally buy alcohol or, in most cases, to rent a car. Church clothes closet helps area residents stay warm
Warm clothing on a cold February morning attracted families from around Mont-gomery on Saturday and the best part was the price -- free.
The inaugural clothing giveaway sponsored by Unity United Church of Christ on Oxford Drive was a big success as church members pitched in to help in any way they could.For some time, women have bid farewell to the days when women handbags were just used for 'functional reasons'.
Some greeted area resi-dents inside the church, while others helped those in need of a helping hand take items to their vehicles.
The Rev. Bennie Liggins said his wife, Gloria, came up with the clothes closet idea. He said it was the latest in a series of community-ori-ented programs to help peo-ple.
"We get a lot of calls for help because of the econo-my, and we do all we can to help those who need a lift," said Liggins. "We hope to continue this in the years to come."
The clothes closet offered everything from slippers to dresses, but most of the coats were gone before Sat-urday's event began.
"It's still cold and people contact us all the time for subsistence and clothes,Some of the ed hardy hats DC created on the knitting machine." he said. "I believe that you shouldn't have a church un-less you're feeding some-body or offering them warm clothing on cold days."

He said his church has a "strong mentoring pro-gram" that provides educa-tional assistance as well as medical help for those who cannot afford it.

The inaugural clothing giveaway sponsored by Unity United Church of Christ on Oxford Drive was a big success as church members pitched in to help in any way they could.For some time, women have bid farewell to the days when women handbags were just used for 'functional reasons'.
Some greeted area resi-dents inside the church, while others helped those in need of a helping hand take items to their vehicles.
The Rev. Bennie Liggins said his wife, Gloria, came up with the clothes closet idea. He said it was the latest in a series of community-ori-ented programs to help peo-ple.
"We get a lot of calls for help because of the econo-my, and we do all we can to help those who need a lift," said Liggins. "We hope to continue this in the years to come."
The clothes closet offered everything from slippers to dresses, but most of the coats were gone before Sat-urday's event began.
"It's still cold and people contact us all the time for subsistence and clothes,Some of the ed hardy hats DC created on the knitting machine." he said. "I believe that you shouldn't have a church un-less you're feeding some-body or offering them warm clothing on cold days."

Man dies at state recycling company
A worker at a Racine County recycling plant is dead after his clothing apparently got tangled in machinery.
The sheriff's office says Kyle Wene of West Allis worked at a plant in Rochester for Kenosha-based Green 46 Recycling.
Wene was working on a conveyor belt used to process asphalt shingles for recycling. Every Kid Should Have Their Own Toothbrush
A little boy looked at the toothbrush in the bag of toiletries he'd been given and exclaimed, "I've never had my own toothbrush.it was the musical equivalent of a midlife crisis, like when your dad thinks he's “hip” by wearing ed hardy jeans."
Our travels for Southern (Dis)Comfort tour today took us to an impressive clothing distribution center in Shelby, NC, stocked and staffed by volunteers from the local Junior Women's Club. They raise funds and purchase new clothing and toiletries for the hundreds of homeless kids in this typical small (21,000) city in south central North Carolina.
Seeing the smiles on kids faces when they receive a new outfit, get a stack of new undies and socks,There's a reason Manolo blahnik shoes are considered the crème de al crème of all shoes, everywhere. and walk out with their own toothbrush has to be rewarding for volunteers running this operation.For some time, women have bid farewell to the days when women handbags were just used for 'functional reasons'. They do it right, with dignity, and give families a chance to "look normal" despite their abnormal living conditions.
We're continuing our quest to bring faces and voices of homeless families, teens and adults to southern communities on our (insane) 2,000 mile route. We both struggle with moments wondering why we're doing what we're doing. Mine came today as I had to climb onto the roof of our rolling quarters, my spartan motor home dubbed "Tillie", and try to find a hairline crack that was causing a leak. I scooted out between torrential rainstorms, sloshing through the muddied parking lot adjacent to the Shelby shelter where we were plugged in for the night. It was raw. I was chilled. I grasped the caulk gun, and climbed up onto the roof. From there I could see a kid's tricycle sitting in the middle of the fenced-in shelter yard.
Despite every effort to make things appear normal - a toothbrush, new clothes, tricycle, a place to play - life is far from normal for kids undergoing bouts of homelessness with their families. For us to pretend otherwise is flat out wrong. While I'm happy for kids to have a place to play, for families to get clothing and other assistance, for a little boy to have his own toothbrush, I'm outraged that it needs to be their reality. Even more outrageous is that homelessness is a soaring reality for many more families, youth and adults than we'd ever be able to count.
Among the ironies of this time period Pat and I are traveling is the embarrassingly inadequate effort now occurring to count homeless people in America so HUD can report to Congress the state of the homeless union. Good people give this count a tremendous effort. But HUD seems to want to limit the range of homelessness by ignoring the realities experienced by millions of families across the land. Families doubled-up or bouncing between cheap motels don't fit the HUD definition of homelessness, limiting among other things the assistance they receive.
Congress still doesn't understand homelessness.The man who helped Jordan win jordan 6 rings as a player wants to be a coach, and though inexperienced, But Congresswoman Judy Biggert (IL-13, R) has risen above the clueless crowd and introduced the "Homeless Children and Youth Act of 2011" which expands HUD's definition of homelessness to match what other federal agencies use--the one that makes sense because it is how families and youth experience homelessness. She's been championing this cause for a dozen years and is now the chair of the House subcommittee that oversees HUD.
If you're outraged because kids don't get to have their own toothbrush, their own pillow, or their own place to do homework, then sign this petition to urge your Congressperson to co-sponsor Mrs. Biggert's bill. It will take less time than it took you to read this far. It won't magically end the problem of homelessness but it will go a long way to taking that first step, admitting we have a problem.
