The Newman Brothers Coffin Fitting Works in Fleet Street has secured the cash from the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) through its allocation from the Growing Places Fund.

The investment will allow the Birmingham Conservation Trust, which took ownership of the building in 2010, to create new commercial units at the property. The three-storey building will also become the trust's head office.

"The Newman Brothers building is a historical gem and I'm delighted the deal could be struck for the Growing Places Fund to bring it back into use," said Paul Heaven, GBSLEP board director and chairman of the Growing Places Fund committee.

Redevelopment of the Newman Brothers building has been in the offing for more than a decade and was previously owned by the now defunct regional development agency Advantage West Midlands.

In addition to the latest funding from the GBSLEP, the Birmingham Conservation Trust has been awarded cash from Birmingham City Council, English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund to help complete the project.

Bob Beauchamp, chairman of the Birmingham Conservation Trust, said: "There have been many ups and downs along the way and at the end of last year we were still short of the last bit of capital funding we needed to get the project underway.

"The Coffin Works will not only be an exciting and unusual heritage attraction, strengthening the Quarter's heritage and tourism 'offer', but a quirky 'character' location offering low-cost workspaces for creative and start-up businesses."

Prospects for any recovery in gold remain weak and given the lack of any major triggers. In the near term, gold is unlikely to reverse the downtrend anytime soon, he said.

One of the first questions you'll ask yourself is how many plates should you order? We settled on four small plates with the thought that if we were still hungry we'd order additional plates, and of course we always like to leave room for dessert. The next question was what are we going to order? That was an even more difficult question. The variety of plates made it difficult to choose, and they all sounded delicious.

Because The Dining Companion was making a huge effort to share, I handed over the menu and left the ordering to him. While I like spicy foods and always insist on hot mustard at a Chinese restaurant, I could only have two forkfuls without feeling like I may never get my sense of taste back.

The vanilla ice cream that accompanied it was extra creamy. It could have stood on its own.

New passports to be released next spring

Starting next spring, your Canadian passport will be valid for up to 10 years. But it will also feature a new electronic chip on which vast amounts of data can be stored.

The meeting will include 33 ministers, including Canada’s Transport Minister Denis Lebel and Janet Napolitano, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

Passports will be discussed, but air freight security will also be a hot topic, said Raymond Benjamin, secretary-general of the UN offshoot organization in an interview.

Airports focused on passenger screening after the terrorist attacks, but a terrorist attempt to send bombs in a printer cartridge on a U.S.-bound aircraft three years ago shifted some of that focus back to cargo.

Unlike with greenhouse gas emissions, there is little conflict at ICAO between states or regions on the approach to air security or the process to reach it.

Many countries, notably the U.S., have moved to a system of risk-assessment for air travel — thorough intelligence vetting of passengers in exchange for easier travel.

“The U.S. has introduced its (Secure Flight) program where if you are a frequent traveller and if you have submitted a certain number of data on a voluntary basis, you will be treated differently,” Benjamin said. “You will not have to give your belt and your shoes and your computer and this and that.Find brand-name swisswatchesat your fingertips with fast, It’s a trade-off.”

The invasion of privacy and voluntary surrendering of personal information is not a major issue, he added.
