New London - Nathan Clark wasn't wrong several years ago when he called Shamrock Motor Co. and said his 1931 Isotta Fraschini might need new rubber.

"It needed a lot more than tires,'' said Simon Potter, owner of Shamrock, where the Italian sports car has been stored in the window of the former Pontiac showroom on Montauk Ave. It has not been used for 37 years.

Clark, of Clarks shoes fame, came to New London once a year to attend the American Dance Festival at Connecticut College. He took dancers out for dinners and for drives in his classic Ivory coupe.

He died last year at age 94. He had not seen the car since 1976 when the dance festival moved to Durham, Mass.

The car is scheduled to be auctioned off Oct. 8 by Bonhams auction house in Philadelphia. It will be photographed for the British auction house and is expected to be on the cover of a catalog.

Potter estimates the car could be worth around $250,000. He guesses it would cost just as much to restore it.

Clark was English born and lived in New York City. He worked for the Clarks shoe company, which was founded by his great-grandfather. "I was thrilled to be in that car,'' said Ursin, who watched Thursday as the ivory car was pushed into a waiting truck.

Over the years, Ursin kept in touch with Clark, who introduced her to the summer playwrights conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford. She is also co-director of the Dragon's Egg and Mystic Paper Beasts.

"He was witty, kind, particular, and ever dedicated to modern dance, especially to dancers,'' she said. "Nathan was a sweet friend to me, to many."

He was on the board of the American Dance Festival, and last year, Ursin said, the faculty concert was dedicated to him.

On Thursday, the two-door coupe, whose style was a favorite of long-ago movie stars like Clara Bow and Rudolph Valentino, emerged from the showroom after the tires were inflated and winches installed. The car has not been started since the 1980s.

We both struggle with moments wondering why we're doing what we're doing. Despite every effort to make things appear normal - a toothbrush, new clothes, tricycle, a place to play - life is far from normal for kids undergoing bouts of homelessness with their families. For us to pretend otherwise is flat out wrong. While I'm happy for kids to have a place to play, for families to get clothing and other assistance, for a little boy to have his own toothbrush, I'm outraged that it needs to be their reality. Even more outrageous is that homelessness is a soaring reality for many more families, youth and adults than we'd ever be able to count.

Among the ironies of this time period Pat and I are traveling is the embarrassingly inadequate effort now occurring to count homeless people in America so HUD can report to Congress the state of the homeless union. Good people give this count a tremendous effort. But HUD seems to want to limit the range of homelessness by ignoring the realities experienced by millions of families across the land. Families doubled-up or bouncing between cheap motels don't fit the HUD definition of homelessness, limiting among other things the assistance they receive.
