The UCI Independent Commission looking into the Lance Armstrong probe will hold a ‘truth and reconciliation’ public hearing despite the International Cycling Union’s reluctance.

“The Commission is of the view that … such a process would ensure that the most complete evidence is available to the Commission at its hearing in April 2013,” the UCI Independent Commission said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The Commission, via the Solicitors to the Inquiry, has written to the UCI’s solicitors, urging the UCI to reconsider its position.”

A public procedural hearing will take place “as soon as possible”, the Commission added.

On Tuesday, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said it had a number of serious concerns regarding the commission’s terms of reference and its ability to carry out its role without undue influence.

“In particular, WADA is concerned that the scope of the inquiry is too focused on sanctioned former cyclist Lance Armstrong … and will therefore not fully address such a widespread and ingrained problem,” said WADA.

The WADA also said the commission’s June deadline would not offer enough time for a proper investigation. It also questioned the independence of the commission and was unhappy that they were not offering immunity for witnesses who come forward.

USADA responded by saying the UCI’s banning of Armstrong was not the end of the problem because USADA’s investigation showed that doping was rife in professional cycling.

Lance Armstrong's expected confession that he used performance-enhancing drugs could be a positive for cycling, if he helps drug enforcement agencies police cheaters, Jonathan Vaughters said Tuesday.

"If Lance chooses to come forward and be honest and helpful with USADA and WADA and really change the direction of the sport, then I have to be encouraged by that," said Vaughters, the CEO of Boulder-based Team Garmin-Sharp, from his team's training camp in Calpe, Spain.

After steadfastly holding out, I took the plunge and joined the Facebook age last weekend.

I’m not quite sure what compelled me to set up my own Facebook page, and I’m still a bit undecided on whether that was really a good idea.you can join a worldwide network of etareplicawatch and outdoor enthusiasts.

But after continually hearing about “Facebook” this and “Facebook” that, and given the growing power and prominence of social media, it seemed like a good idea…..or at least something that was worth a try.

One of the first things I figured out was that way too many people spend way too much time on Facebook.

I pledge – and this is a promise I’m pretty sure I can keep – not to be one of them.

By the time Kat and I sorted through a password glitch Saturday morning, which only took a couple minutes, I had a number of “friend” responses……it’s like, don’t you guys have anything else to do on a Saturday morning?

Of course, I guess I was doing the same thing, so I can’t really say too much.

Now I have to figure out exactly what to do with said Facebook page.

I’ve already figured out how to chat with somebody, which is nothing more than an instant-messaging feature and not very cutting edge in terms of communications.

And I’m browsing through other Facebook pages, picking up a little information here and there, seeing what other people are up to, checking out photos and what not.

But beyond that, I’m still trying to figure out how the whole thing works….on the theory that maybe you really can teach an old dog new tricks.

So what exactly does one put on one’s Facebook page?

Seems like each individual sets their own parameters.

In addition to private conversations and posts, users can put up posts about anything they like (or dislike) up for the world to see.

That doesn’t seem like it would always be a good idea. After all, “sharing” can be over-rated.I was finally getting the aaabrandshirts of my dreams.

That, I believe, is a redeeming quality of Facebook. Still, I don’t need to know what everybody had for lunch and whether they found a great deal on a pair of shoes at the mall. I’m more interested in, say, major life events, accomplishments or happenings….but then again, that’s just me.

I don’t really see me putting a lot of posts up on Facebook. Anybody who wants to know what’s happening with me, or my thoughts on a topic, can do it the old-fashioned way and read my column.

I do see Facebook as a great tool to keep track of what’s happening around our communities.

After all, when something happens the first thing somebody does is put it on Facebook. That’s a lot easier and more effective than calling around.

The power of Facebook was demonstrated in Gustine recently, when postings about the plight of a family displaced by fire helped quickly spread the word and generated a remarkable outpouring of support. Say what you want about Facebook, it does have its selling points.

Folks do have plenty to say about Facebook, of course.

It took about 15 minutes for my smart-aleck brother to give me grief for getting a Facebook page. Of course, he did so by messaging me on his wife’s Facebook page, so I’m not sure he is one to talk.

At the other end of the spectrum are those who just wouldn’t know what to do without Facebook, and who are never far removed from their page.

Facebook was rather addictive for a bit, I have to admit, but after tinkering with it off and on for a while Saturday I was kind of over it already (maybe because football games were starting).

We’ll see how it all works out, and how I feel about Facebook after actually figuring out how to use it.

In 2003, after he completed his MBA, he ventured into a business as planned, with an initial investment of Rs 3 lakh, which he “borrowed” from his father. He took distributorship of food products from various manufacturers.

He stocked and distributed many products from packaged atta, maida to asafoetida to provision stores from a small portion of a building in Chennai. In a tight spot again, he decided to set up his own manufacturing facility. Now his group employs a little over 300 people. “My dream is to expand the business and employ at least 1,000 people by 2015,” says Raja.

"We (India) offered you the duty free access to your all products two years ago but compared to what we thought export (from Bangladesh) did not increase that much," Deputy High Commissioner of India here Sandeep Chakravarty told a curtain raiser ceremony of a planned "India Show" earlier this week.

According to commerce ministry statistics, the bilateral trade gap of Bangladesh with India was USD 4.08 billion in 2010-11 fiscal year with Indian exports amounting for USD 4.5 billion.

Financial analysts say Bangladesh's export to India is also gradually improving and reached half a billion dollars in 2010-11 from USD 358 million in 2007-08 and USD 289 million in 2006-07.

The trade deficit between India and Bangladesh more than doubled in just five years, reflecting a galloping economic imbalance between the two close neighbours.

In the story, one anonymous Jet said Tebow was "terrible" and another said "We don't look at him as a quarterback" but as a "Wildcat guy."

"I'm proud to be a Jet," said Tebow, who called his teammates "awesome dudes" and "great guys."

"You try to be stronger from it," added Tebow, who said he hadn't read the story but had been told about it.

"It doesn't really make me worry," Tebow said. "Negative things being said about you always can be a little frustrating or saddening, but at the same time you're always motivated to go out there and keep working. In Christy Martin's world everything was pink.

Except the blood. On a March night 15 years ago in a boxing ring on the Las Vegas Strip it was bright red and it was everywhere, gushing from a freshly broken nose and forming a mosaic of stains on Martin's pink trunks.

The people who had paid thousands to sit at ringside were there to watch Mike Tyson win the heavyweight title against Frank Bruno, not two women fight. But as the blood flowed the cheers started raining down as the unlikely warriors bathed in red traded punches for six rounds before Martin won a unanimous decision.

Tyson would knock Bruno out in the third round that night to win the title for what would be the last time. But those at the MGM Grand arena and watching at home on pay-per-view couldn't stop talking about the woman in pink who brawled, bled and fought like a man.

A few weeks later she would be on the cover of Sports Illustrated staring defiantly with her gloves on her hips under the heading "The Lady is a Champ." Promoter Don King penciled her in for Tyson's next undercard, and the next after that.

"I'll open the show and Mike will close it," she boasted.

On fight weeks, fans would mob Martin in the hotel lobby, asking for pictures and autographs. Always at her side were her trainer/husband, Jim Martin, and a 300-pound Elvis wannabe who doubled as her bodyguard.

Martin was arguably the best female boxer of her era, but even her role was mostly limited to being in the supporting cast on boxing cards headlined by males.

In 2003, she and Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali, drew a crowd of more than 8,000 in Mississippi to what was billed as the biggest women's fight ever. But two years later, Arum's plan to pay $1 million to the winner of Martin's scheduled fight with Lucia Rijker fizzled when only 100 tickets were sold with a week to go before the bout.

"If a woman is at the top of the bill you'll never sell a ticket," Arum said.

Still, Martin did fine in a series of fights for King. Her base purse was $100,000, and once she made as much as $250,000. It was enough to buy herself and her husband luxury cars and a nice house in a suburb of Orlando, Fla.

She fought anyone put in front of her, but that's not saying much in a sport with a thin talent pool. In a bout on the undercard of a Tyson-Evander Holyfield fight, she knocked out a woman in the first round. Turned out the loser was a dancer who had never been in the ring before.

Once she had a fight called off at the last moment because her opponent was pregnant. Another time she was dropped from a card at a bull ring in Mexico City after officials decided to enforce a 50-year-old law that banned women from fighting each other so their reproductive organs wouldn't be harmed.

But the 5-foot-4 Martin wasn't afraid to take on a much bigger Ali, only to be stopped in the fourth round. And she won a decision over Mia St. John, who couldn't break an egg but landed on the cover of Playboy magazine.

Martin always stood out from other women fighters because she loved to trade punches. That got the crowd's attention, but the fact that her slugfests often turned bloody was what really fired them up.

That was never more evident than when Deirdre Gogarty broke Martin's nose in the second round on the Tyson-Bruno undercard and blood flowed the rest of the fight. Many in the sport consider it the birth of women's boxing, the first time fans paid attention to a woman fighter for both her skills and her guts.

"I had no idea what I had done but people kept coming up to me that night wanting pictures and autographs," Martin said. "I got back to my room and there were messages from the 'Today Show' and Jay Leno. I thought it was a joke, and I couldn't believe they were being so cruel."
