Fairy gardens can bring magic to your yard

There is a sort of magic that happens in fairy gardens, those miniature landscapes meant to inspire tiny mythical creatures to visit your yard.

Wilson Nurseries in Frankfort, Ky., regularly hosts fairy-garden workshops, where the air is often abuzz with an excited fluttering to and fro, as garden revelers gather building blocks like moss, pastel pebbles and shiny ceramic mushrooms to assemble tiny masterpieces. Bright flashes of sparkling glitter, said to help welcome fairies, and sun-catching glass beads, like shimmering dew drops,A fashioncartierreplicawatches is an item which is used to contribute, add a glow. The muted hum of conversation and cheery chatter can be heard as the gardeners go about the task of creating fern- and fantasy-filled container gardens.

Even if you're skeptical about the existence of fairies, it's hard to deny the obvious joy shared by these garden makers as they are gently guided in the art and craft of assembling a small sprite habitat to take home.

Wilson's organizer and instructor for these events, Teresa Abell, tells of an interesting phenomenon that happens as fairy gardens are made.

"People will start out not talking at all," she says, "yet by the time they leave, they have gotten to know each other, are having a lot of conversations and have made new friends."

They share ideas, supplies and stories about just why they have come to create a fairy garden.

Abell, who has been with Wilson Nurseries for eight years, began stocking fairy supplies about three years ago after encountering fairy culture at a wholesale market in Atlanta. The idea of holding workshops occurred to her as she was putting together a greenhouse display. It was a natural fit.

"I love gardens, and I love working with people," she says.

The idea caught on, and each of Wilson's dozen or more fairy garden events over the past year has sold out. In addition to the monthly scheduled workshops, groups of 10 to 20 people can request private events from June until March.

Each participant, "from ages 4 to over 70," Abell says, finds his or her own niche. Container gardens, which can be grown indoors as well as outside in warmer months, offer accessibility to older adults with limited mobility or to those who are living in a retirement community or nursing home.

The charm of fairy dust also has great appeal for children. Creating a special miniature garden is an easy way to begin growing a green thumb.

Abell has many participants who start out knowing nothing about gardening, but in two hours, she says, "have developed a passion for it."

Connie Hicks, who helps with the workshops, adds, "It's fun. You get to feel like a kid - along with everybody else."

The workshop's $35 fee includes a kit with a container, potting medium, three plants, mulch, pathway stones and a miniature metal archway and birdbath, as well as instruction and care. The fee is per fairy garden; it can be shared by a pair or group of participants. Collectibles - used marbles and dollhouse furniture, twigs and acorns, anything that would fit well into a miniature landscape - can also be brought from home.

One workshop participant, Susie Oder of Frankfort, brought a small stone pre-Columbian artifact from her stepfather's legacy of miniatures to set in her garden as a remembrance.

Extras like hypertufa English cottages, glazed ceramic mushrooms and an assortment of small-scale benches, tools and seasonal decorations can be purchased at Wilson.

Workshop participant Virginia Lyle, 8, of Frankfort felt the fairy power. She was intently focused on designing her second fairy garden, paving a meandering path she had created with small pebbles in pastel hues and tucking in teensy-leaved plants into her low, wide container. Virginia's mom, Lola Lyle, explained that her daughter's first fairy garden was a project shared with a friend. Virginia wanted to return to make one just to keep at her own home.

In the neonatal intensive care unit at Royal Columbian Hospital, where Nathan DeWitt was born 21 years ago, not too much has changed, except DeWitt himself. Wheelchair racing began as a hobby, but DeWitt quickly learned he had the skills to win. “It started as recreation. They said I had some sort of talent, and a good chance of making it,” he said.

Of the stress associated with competing for Team Canada, DeWitt’s not afraid.

“I can naturally block it out. I have no hype to live up to. I just go, race my own race.” DeWitt is focusing on the first step, the semifinals, and on racing a personal best. His first sprint takes place Sept. 4.

Though he’s had health setbacks, mainly from a cerebral shunt that was replaced 19 times over the years after a bout of hydrocephalus (swelling in the brain) at three days old. His family has faith he will excel in London.

“He’s had health issues, but every time he comes back with a vengeance,” Shane said. “He has that internal passion you need to be successful in life, or in sport.”

Frazier ready to step in and lead the Schalick High Shool

Fabled Ybor rooster puts the fun in funeral

He asked Stephens if he wouldn't mind if the group resurrected the procession. Stephens, who did not attend because of a business trip, agreed.

Wyatt's teammate at Alabama, Justin Thomas of Goshen, Ky., was among six players tied for second at 5 under.

Ready-to-wear's still relatively new for you. How does it compare to your other collections?

I think it's the hardest of all categories. A bag doesn't have to fit anyone's thighs or hips, and neither does a shoe! It definitely requires a lot of work, but it's great to do clothing again.

How do you manage your time with all your projects?

How do you unwind?

The concept for the men's collection really came about last year. Parents, students debate school uniform policy

The burgundy and navy school uniforms at Reading Edge Academy were a "big influencing factor" in Jill Wells' decision to enroll her twins in kindergarten at the DeBary charter school.

"I think it actually looks more professional. It sets the tone," the Deltona mom said of the school uniform policy. "It doesn't distract from the real purpose for being there, which is to learn."

That's one of the reasons School Board members are looking at adopting a uniform policy for the 61,000 students enrolled in Volusia's public schools. Four of the five board members said this week they favor uniforms, maybe something like the polo shirts and pants, shorts or skorts Reading Edge students wear.

No timeline has been set for deciding how the Volusia uniforms would look or when students might have to start wearing them.

Uniforms may also be in the works in Flagler County -- where some School Board members favor the idea -- though not for next school year. "When the children come in to school, they're coming in to think about education and learning, versus what somebody else is wearing," said School Board member John Fischer, who broached the idea of requiring uniforms at a recent meeting.

While some adults believe students will behave and learn better if they wear uniforms, Spruce Creek High School sophomore Morgan Finley sees a flip side to that argument. The 15-year-old said wearing clothes of her own choosing -- like the denim capri pants,Manolo blahnik would be "hurt" if Anna Wintour wore shoes by another designer. sweatshirt jacket and flip-flops she sported Thursday -- is more comfortable and "helps me focus more."

That's the case at Imagine School at Town Center, Principal Lisa O'Grady said. The Palm Coast charter school has had uniforms of polo shirts tucked into khaki or navy bottoms since it opened in 2008.

The students are excused from wearing their uniforms one day per month and there are noticeably more problems on those days, O'Grady said. "(The uniform) eliminates distractions for kids during the school year," she said. "They're just here for one reason and that's to learn."

Osceola County schools saw "a reduced number of classroom disruptions and gang presence on campus" after a uniform policy was adopted in 2008, spokeswoman Dana Schafer said. "Can we attribute it all to the dress code? No."

Volusia school administrators plan to visit campuses in Osceola and Seminole counties this month as part of their research into dress codes and uniform policies. The Seminole school system tightened up its countywide dress code last summer but stopped short of mandating a specific uniform.

"It's a public school. We should be able to express ourselves," said Bryan Mills, a Spruce Creek junior. "We're coming through an age where personal expression and freedom are of utmost importance. Uniformity is a deal breaker for me."

The dress code debate isn't necessarily one of adults versus students.

Amanda Hilton, an Ormond Beach mom with an 8-year-old daughter in second grade, plans to circulate petitions opposing school uniforms. Hilton said her daughter has "real good fashion sense" and likes to dress in "cute little-girl clothes."

The idea of taking that choice away during school hours is too much for her mother. "They're taking away our freedom of expression. I believe the school has a lot of control already. It's too much control."

Judge vacates rape conviction on strength of DNA evidence

MANATEE, Fla. During a two-day hearing two weeks ago, Julie Heinig, a DNA expert from the DNA Diagnostics Center, testified that after analyzing the assailant's T-shirt, Williams "was excluded a contributor on this shirt, and it's highly likely he did not wear it."

Gilner said in his order that the new DNA evidence "would probably produce an acquittal on retrial." Some of the destroyed evidence included a rape kit, three hairs (one with a root) and vacuum samples from the victim's car. They were kept in a First Union bank vault with evidence from approximately 3,600 other cases. The hearing included testimony from Jeane Dixon, a former director of the property and evidence division at the sheriff's office, who testified about her plan to get rid of the evidence impacted by a destroyed bank vault during the hearing.

Because of concerns about moisture and a musty odor in July 1997, she said a dehumidifier was placed in the vault. Then in 2002 it was discovered the dehumidifier was not functioning properly and was a health hazard, requiring the cleanup and disposal of certain items.

Dixon testified that she was aware of Florida Statute 925.11 requiring that she develop a plan to dispose of the evidence that included going through all the evidence, preserving biological evidence, and obtaining approval from the State Attorney's Office and her chain-of-command about the destruction of any evidence.

'Mompreneurs meet business challenges'

Gathered around the table enjoying an afternoon coffee are four Bluffton moms. Their conversation could easily be about carpool, spring break or summer camps for their kids, but not today. Today, they are discussing business, specifically, the upcoming "Local Business Showcase" being hosted this weekend by Lowcountry Moms, a group dedicated to arranging play dates and social activities for moms and children of all ages throughout Beaufort County.

The phenomenon is so widespread; it has even garnered its own moniker, "Mompreneur" with websites and magazines dedicated to helping their homegrown businesses thrive.

According to The Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute, women-owned small businesses will account for the majority of job growth in the coming years. Guardian's research shows that by 2018, women entrepreneurs will be responsible for creating between 5 million and 5.5 million new jobs nationwide.

What is driving this trend? For these four women, the reasons for striking out on their own are as varied as their businesses. "We saw a real need in the marketplace and finally decided we'd open up our own business," she said.

Still, the challenges are nothing compared to the rewards. "I like that I'm setting a good example for my daughter," said Shefsisk. Malloy credited her mother and grandmother for teaching her about entrepreneurship. Both had owned their own businesses over the years. Custom-made clothes—which were popular in the '50s and '60s—are making a big comeback in Europe.

"People have come to realize that the expensive designer suit they are used to buying is made to fit a thousand other people," says Rome-based tailor Luigi Gallo, who has been in the trade for more than 30 years. "In addition, they're paying a huge price for that logo sewed into the jacket."
