The latest domestic energy boom is sweeping through some of the
nation's driest pockets, drawing millions of gallons of water to unlock
oil and gas reserves from beneath the Earth's surface.
Hydraulic
fracturing, or the drilling technique commonly known as fracking, has
been used for decades to blast huge volumes of water, fine sand and
chemicals into the ground to crack open valuable shale formations.
But
now, as energy companies vie to exploit vast reserves west of the
Mississippi, fracking's new frontier is expanding to the same lands
where crops have shriveled and waterways have dried up due to severe
drought.
In Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas,
Utah and Wyoming, the vast majority of the counties where fracking is
occurring are also suffering from drought, according to an Associated
Press analysis of industry-compiled fracking data and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's official drought designations.
While
fracking typically consumes less water than farming or residential
uses, the exploration method is increasing competition for the precious
resource, driving up the price of water and burdening already depleted
aquifers and rivers in certain drought-stricken stretches.
Some
farmers and city leaders worry that the fracking boom is consuming too
much of a scarce resource, while others see the push for production as
an opportunity to make money by selling water while furthering the
nation's goal of energy independence.
Along Colorado's Front
Range, fourth-generation farmer Kent Peppler said he is fallowing some
of his corn fields this year because he can't afford to irrigate the
land for the full growing season, in part because deep-pocketed energy
companies have driven up the price of water.
"There is a new
player for water, which is oil and gas," said Peppler, of Mead, Colo.,
who also serves as president of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union.Three

In
a normal year, Peppler said he would pay anywhere from $9 to $100 for
an acre-foot of water in auctions held by cities with excess supplies.If

$1,200 to $2,900 per acre-foot. The Denver suburb of Aurora made a $9.5
million, five-year deal last summer to provide the oil company Anadarko

Texas, where drought has forced cotton farmers to scale back, local
water officials said drillers are contributing to a drop in the water
table in several areas.

to frack wells in the southern half of the Eagle Ford Shale, one of the
nation's most profitable oil and gas fields.
That's equal to
about half of the water recharged annually into the southern portion of
the aquifer, which spans five counties that are home to about 330,000
people, said Ron Green, a scientist with the nonprofit Southwest
Research Institute in San Antonio.
The Eagle Ford, extending
from the Mexican border into East Texas, began to boom in 2011, just as
Texas struggled with the worst one-year drought in its history. While
conditions have improved, most of the state is still dealing with some
level of drought, and many reservoirs and aquifers have not been fully
replenished.
"The oil industry is doing the big fracks and
pumping a substantial amount of water around here," said Ed Walker,
general manager of the Wintergarden Groundwater Conservation District,
which manages an aquifer that serves as the main water source for
farmers and about 29,000 people in three counties.
"When you
have a big problem like the drought and you add other smaller problems
to it like all the fracking, then it only makes things worse," Walker
said.
West Texas cotton farmer Charlie Smith is trying to make
the best of the situation. He plans to sell some of the groundwater
coursing beneath his fields to drillers, because it isn't enough to
irrigate his lands in Glasscock County. Smith's fields, like the rest of
the county, were declared to be in a drought disaster area this year by
the USDA.
"I was going to bed every night and praying to the
good Lord that we would get just one rain on the crop," said Smith, who
hopes to earn several thousand dollars for each acre-foot of water he
can sell. "I realized we're not making any money farming, so why not
sell the water to the oil companies? Every little bit helps."

amount of water needed to hydraulically fracture a well varies

John passed away peacefully at his
home in Poway, CA on September 11, 2012 following a courageous battle with GBM
cancer. At his side was his loving wife of 35 years Linda, his oldest daughter
Janine and mother in law Myriam Hume.
John was born on June 1, 1957 in San Francisco, CA at Mt. I was born with shallow hip sockets and one leg 2in shorter than the other (I was also born with a twisted spine and clawed feet). DO YOU WORK OUT?
I go to the gym three times a week, but don't kill myself. I have a costume room on the fifth floor of my house, filled with my headdresses, outfits and shoes. I run up there four or five times a day.
EVER DIETED?
Not since my 20s. Diets work initially but then you get so hungry you end up eating more. But my mother has always been overweight and I'm prone to weight gain, too, so I limit myself to 1,500 calories a day. I always have huge pots of vegetable soup on the stove — cabbage or cauliflower or parsnip.
ANY VICES?
I have a glass of champagne once a month, but don't drink otherwise.
POP ANY PILLS?

DO YOU WORK OUT?
I go to the gym three times a week, but don't kill myself. I have a costume room on the fifth floor of my house, filled with my headdresses, outfits and shoes. I run up there four or five times a day.
EVER DIETED?
Not since my 20s. Diets work initially but then you get so hungry you end up eating more. But my mother has always been overweight and I'm prone to weight gain, too, so I limit myself to 1,500 calories a day. I always have huge pots of vegetable soup on the stove — cabbage or cauliflower or parsnip.
ANY VICES?
I have a glass of champagne once a month, but don't drink otherwise.
POP ANY PILLS?

Joe Biden slams Gov. Rick Scott over high-speed rail line

In the January governorship rerun elections for Delta State, the debate offered a rare opportunity for candidates to be engaged directly by citizens in a no-holds-barred environment, and just a few weeks ago, Lagosians were treated to another robust, substantial debate where the state governor was made to account for his stewardship while his opponents made the case for why they were better caretakers for the country's commercial capital. It gave us one of the finest soundbites from this campaign season: "It's not their age that is the problem," the governor said. "It's the age of their ideas."
Many Nigerians, therefore, had great expectations for our country's first vice presidential TV debate, especially since the cast of vice presidential candidates is a colourful one that includes respected cleric Tunde Bakare, famed corporate whiz Fola Adeola, and experienced public servant John Oyegun. Also expected - until he chickened out without explanation - was former governor and now Vice President, Namadi Sambo.
Unfortunately, the debate we got was neither the debate we expected nor that which we deserved - and it had little to do with the disappearance of Mr.Can't find a particular pair of ed hardy jeans on our website? Sambo. Save for perfunctory references to their principals being "the best candidate for president that Nigerians have," none of the debaters was able to make a solid case for why their ticket is far and above the rest the best choice for Nigeria at this time.
Candidates instead turned to sweeping generalizations as they struggled to outdo themselves in offering choice words for the People's Democratic Party. If we didn't know any better, it would be easy to conclude that there are only two parties in this contest: PDP and The Others.
While there is something to be said for civility and geniality, the debaters were rather too comfortable and self-satisfied and appeared in no hurry to draw sharp contrasts in ideology,Manolo blahnik would be "hurt" if Anna Wintour wore shoes by another designer. mission and strategy, almost as if there was no hope that this debate would serve any useful purpose for the electorate.
The debate was also frustratingly void of specifics. In one cringeworthy moment, candidates grouped women and the disabled together in yet another instance of obtuseness in correctly deconstructing issues and offering constructive ideas. Whilst the debate was disappointing, in the final analysis, we take solace in the fact that democracy is a process, and this debate is a huge step forward, being the first of its kind.
It is also remarkable that the post-debate analysis in the media has put the president on the hotseat, even as he seeks every possible excuse to avoid the scrutiny that a TV debate offers. Keri Hilson goes for a blend of edge and grace

One of her softer, more fashion-y moments came at last year's CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards, which she attended with designer Chris Benz, wearing a single-sleeve, brown, blue and marigold circular print dress from Benz's spring 2011 collection.
"It is very ironic," Hilson says through a characteristic wide grin. "My family laughs all the time, they ask me, 'Hmm, do you really like those heels? Or are you just buying them just because?'
"I say, 'No, I actually really like them, thank you.' I can appreciate them. I don't like the way they feel, but I can appreciate a good heel. The tomboy part of me is still very much present, but as undertones. I'm grown now, and I want to look womanly."
Keri Hilson is one of those singers. The 28-year-old stunner turns a few heads when she walks through the pool area of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for an interview on a recent sunny weekday morning.

Shot and stabbed, Christy Martin refuses to quit
In Christy Martin's world everything was pink.
Except the blood. On a March night 15 years ago in a boxing ring on the Las Vegas Strip it was bright red and it was everywhere, gushing from a freshly broken nose and forming a mosaic of stains on Martin's pink trunks.
The people who had paid thousands to sit at ringside were there to watch Mike Tyson win the heavyweight title against Frank Bruno, not two women fight. But as the blood flowed the cheers started raining down as the unlikely warriors bathed in red traded punches for six rounds before Martin won a unanimous decision.
Tyson would knock Bruno out in the third round that night to win the title for what would be the last time. But those at the MGM Grand arena and watching at home on pay-per-view couldn't stop talking about the woman in pink who brawled, bled and fought like a man.
A few weeks later she would be on the cover of Sports Illustrated staring defiantly with her gloves on her hips under the heading "The Lady is a Champ." Promoter Don King penciled her in for Tyson's next undercard, and the next after that.
"I'll open the show and Mike will close it," she boasted.
On fight weeks, fans would mob Martin in the hotel lobby, asking for pictures and autographs. Always at her side were her trainer/husband, Jim Martin, and a 300-pound Elvis wannabe who doubled as her bodyguard.

And while boxing loves a good story, there aren't many fighters who return to the ring just weeks after being stabbed and shot.
A basketball player in college, Martin discovered boxing by accident in a tough-woman contest in Beckley, W.Va., where her friends urged her into the ring to compete for a $1,000 prize.
She won, only to find out the purse had been cut to $500. That was OK, though, because Martin found out something else _ she liked knocking other woman silly.

She was 21 and working as a substitute teacher in 1990 when a boxing promoter told her about Jim Martin, who trained fighters in Bristol, Tenn. Jim Martin was so leery of allowing a woman in his gym that he considered having someone hurt her in a sparring session so she would quit. They were an odd couple, the young college graduate who loved the ring and the trainer who was 25 years her senior and sported a bad combover. But their relationship grew into something else as he took charge of her career, and not long afterward they married.
At first they were inseparable, sitting together at press conferences, and training together for fights. But in time the marriage soured, though Jim Martin still trained his wife and they lived in the same house.

Enraged at the thought, Jim Martin threatened to expose the relationship to her fans. Christy Martin later told police her husband stalked her for several days and, at one point, she told her girlfriend, Sherry Jo Lusk, she thought her husband was going to shoot her.
In the early evening hours of last Nov. 23, Christy Martin was in the bedroom talking on the phone with Lusk. Her husband appeared at the door, and she motioned him to wait until she was finished.
Instead, Christy Martin said, her husband came in, holding something behind his back.

Ask promoter Bob Arum and he'll tell you the biggest problem with women's boxing is that men don't particularly like to see women hitting each other, and women like it even less. Though the sport has a small dedicated fan base, women in the ring are generally treated as a side show by fans and boxing promoters.
Martin was arguably the best female boxer of her era, but even her role was mostly limited to being in the supporting cast on boxing cards headlined by males.
In 2003, she and Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali, drew a crowd of more than 8,000 in Mississippi to what was billed as the biggest women's fight ever. But two years later, Arum's plan to pay $1 million to the winner of Martin's scheduled fight with Lucia Rijker fizzled when only 100 tickets were sold with a week to go before the bout.
"If a woman is at the top of the bill you'll never sell a ticket," Arum said.
Still, Martin did fine in a series of fights for King. Her base purse was $100,000, and once she made as much as $250,000. It was enough to buy herself and her husband luxury cars and a nice house in a suburb of Orlando, Fla.
She fought anyone put in front of her, but that's not saying much in a sport with a thin talent pool. In a bout on the undercard of a Tyson-Evander Holyfield fight, she knocked out a woman in the first round. Turned out the loser was a dancer who had never been in the ring before.
Once she had a fight called off at the last moment because her opponent was pregnant. Another time she was dropped from a card at a bull ring in Mexico City after officials decided to enforce a 50-year-old law that banned women from fighting each other so their reproductive organs wouldn't be harmed.
But the 5-foot-4 Martin wasn't afraid to take on a much bigger Ali, only to be stopped in the fourth round. And she won a decision over Mia St. John, who couldn't break an egg but landed on the cover of Playboy magazine.
Martin always stood out from other women fighters because she loved to trade punches. That got the crowd's attention, but the fact that her slugfests often turned bloody was what really fired them up.
That was never more evident than when Deirdre Gogarty broke Martin's nose in the second round on the Tyson-Bruno undercard and blood flowed the rest of the fight. Jim Martin was so leery of allowing a woman in his gym that he considered having someone hurt her in a sparring session so she would quit. They were an odd couple, the young college graduate who loved the ring and the trainer who was 25 years her senior and sported a bad combover. But their relationship grew into something else as he took charge of her career, and not long afterward they married.

Enraged at the thought, Jim Martin threatened to expose the relationship to her fans. Christy Martin later told police her husband stalked her for several days and, at one point, she told her girlfriend, Sherry Jo Lusk, she thought her husband was going to shoot her.

Ask promoter Bob Arum and he'll tell you the biggest problem with women's boxing is that men don't particularly like to see women hitting each other, and women like it even less. Though the sport has a small dedicated fan base, women in the ring are generally treated as a side show by fans and boxing promoters.
Martin was arguably the best female boxer of her era, but even her role was mostly limited to being in the supporting cast on boxing cards headlined by males.
In 2003, she and Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali, drew a crowd of more than 8,000 in Mississippi to what was billed as the biggest women's fight ever. But two years later, Arum's plan to pay $1 million to the winner of Martin's scheduled fight with Lucia Rijker fizzled when only 100 tickets were sold with a week to go before the bout.
"If a woman is at the top of the bill you'll never sell a ticket," Arum said.
Still, Martin did fine in a series of fights for King. Her base purse was $100,000, and once she made as much as $250,000. It was enough to buy herself and her husband luxury cars and a nice house in a suburb of Orlando, Fla.
She fought anyone put in front of her, but that's not saying much in a sport with a thin talent pool. In a bout on the undercard of a Tyson-Evander Holyfield fight, she knocked out a woman in the first round. Turned out the loser was a dancer who had never been in the ring before.
Once she had a fight called off at the last moment because her opponent was pregnant. Another time she was dropped from a card at a bull ring in Mexico City after officials decided to enforce a 50-year-old law that banned women from fighting each other so their reproductive organs wouldn't be harmed.
But the 5-foot-4 Martin wasn't afraid to take on a much bigger Ali, only to be stopped in the fourth round. And she won a decision over Mia St. John, who couldn't break an egg but landed on the cover of Playboy magazine.
Martin always stood out from other women fighters because she loved to trade punches. That got the crowd's attention, but the fact that her slugfests often turned bloody was what really fired them up.
That was never more evident than when Deirdre Gogarty broke Martin's nose in the second round on the Tyson-Bruno undercard and blood flowed the rest of the fight. Many in the sport consider it the birth of women's boxing, the first time fans paid attention to a woman fighter for both her skills and her guts.
"I had no idea what I had done but people kept coming up to me that night wanting pictures and autographs," Martin said. "I got back to my room and there were messages from the 'Today Show' and Jay Leno. I thought it was a joke, and I couldn't believe they were being so cruel."

Budding runner Laura Johnson from Richmond has laced up her running shoes to train for the Virgin London Marathon in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign.
The NHS breast surgical trainee will join thousands of runners on the starting line on Sunday 17 April to support her mother, Emma, who was treated for breast cancer 10 years ago, and has recently been diagnosed with a related metastatic cancer at the age of 57.

Missing Man's Clothing Found On River Bank
Articles of clothing found along the banks of the Missouri River in Yankton are believed to be connected to the case of a missing Yankton man.
In a press release issued Monday, the Yankton Police Department said it is believed the clothing, which was discovered Saturday, belongs to Kyle G. Bender, who was reported missing in mid-December. The press release said the clothing matches the description that was given in the Bender case.
The clothing was discovered along the river at Riverside Park Saturday by a member of the public. According to the police log, the discovery of the clothing was reported at 2:32 p.m.
Lt. Man dies at state recycling company
A worker at a Racine County recycling plant is dead after his clothing apparently got tangled in machinery.
The sheriff's office says Kyle Wene of West Allis worked at a plant in Rochester for Kenosha-based Green 46 Recycling.
Wene was working on a conveyor belt used to process asphalt shingles for recycling.
