Staten said that because of their consumption of harmful insects, bats save the agricultural industry billions of dollars and allow them to limit the use of pesticides. Because of this assistance to farmers, strong bat populations also hold down food costs.

One of the more common bats in this area is the Big Brown Bat. Big, however, is a bit of a misnomer. This breed of bat only weighs between .4 and .8 ounces, though it does have a wing span of 13 to 16 inches.

Staten said the most important thing to know about bats, like many other wild animals, is if you leave them alone, they have no interest in bothering humans.

"Bat populations are dying off due to loss of habitat, and they can be of so much good in any environment," he said.

During the Saturday event Staten, will teach people how to locate and hang bat houses and will have information on where to purchase proper bat houses and how to construct one.

Once a colony forms in the park, members of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will keep track of the bat population and their flight habits through monthly Bat Watches.

The first Bat Watch event is scheduled for Oct. 27 to coincide with Horn Lake's Fright Night at the Park. The Bat Watches are set for 6 p.m. — about dusk, the best time to observe the colony.

The bat house being hung this weekend holds about 100 bats. The hope is that the park will be able to add several 500-capacity bat houses by the end of 2013, Culver said.

A COLOMBIAN woman was convicted and sentenced yesterday for stealing two Rolex watches – valued at $31,000 – from John Bull Ltd. The watches have yet to be recovered.

Before receiving 30 months behind bars at Her Majesty’s prison, 39-year-old Erika Cardenas of Bogota, Colombia, told Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell that she did not know where the watches were because she dropped them on Bay Street as soon she realized the store security was following her.

Cardenas, with co-accused 22-year-old Michael Ruiz, also of Bogota, Colombia appeared in court yesterday afternoon facing two counts of stealing.

It is claimed the pair, on Monday, August 13, stole two Rolex stainless steel watches, together valued at $30,915, property of the John Bull Bay Street store.

Ruiz pleaded not guilty to the charges while Cardenas admitted guilt.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Bethell asked the police prosecutor for the facts surrounding the incident with respect to Cardenas.

“On the day in question,” the prosecutor began, “the defendant, she went to the John Bull store on Bay Street.

Three QBs see playing time against Wildcats

A weekend filled with college football upsets affected no part of BYU's game against Weber State Saturday afternoon, and the Cougars easily crushed their in-state foe with a 45-13 win.

Just like last week's game against Washington State University, BYU was able to show off its deep bench as minor injuries to starting players resulted in second- and third-stringers coming through.

The position with the most versatility was the quarterback, which cycled through three different players in a matter of BYU's eight offensive minutes (not including half time).

"We had a chance to see a lot of players play, including three different quarterbacks, a lot of running backs and a bunch of different players on defense," said BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall. "A lot like what you would expect from a game like this."

Quarterbacks Riley Nelson, James Lark and Taysom Hill each had a large piece of the victory pie as they each contributed to at least one touchdown against the win over the Wildcats.

Nelson, the starting quarterback for BYU, represented the Cougars well during the first half and set a career-high 244 passing yards of BYU's total 307 against Weber State. His previous record was about 80 yards shorter, with 165 in the first half of the Hawaii game last season.

During those first 30 minutes of play time, Nelson lobbed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Cody Hoffman to put the game's first points on the scoreboard.

But the same first half resulted in many incomplete passes and even an interception for the starting quarterback. Those, paired with a tight back, resulted in Nelson being taken out at halftime and the release of the Lark and Hill hounds.

Whether or not Lark and Hill will perform against next week's rival, University of Utah, remains to be seen.

"We know how physical Riley plays the game of football, so we understand that any point in time he could go down, and James and Taysom are both ready to fill his shoes, and they're both great leaders. Next week's game will mark not only BYU's first game on the road, but its first game against a top 25 contender. It's the very same contender that handed the Cougars an embarrassing 54-10 loss last season.

"It's just another game for us," Falslev said. "Everybody gets the hype from Utah-BYU this and that. … We have to be focused and be ready just like any other game. The things we've done ’til now have prepared us for that, but we still have a lot of things we can do a lot better on."

Ontario Liberals race to retake majority

Eric Davis bounded up a stone walkway to shake hands with a potential voter and make his by-election pitch. The last long weekend of the summer was approaching. In a northern Kitchener neighbourhood bordering Waterloo, Daniel Day was one of the few people at home on a hot, sunny weekday afternoon, stripping old white paint from his bungalow’s wooden window frames.

Mr. Davis, the provincial Liberal candidate in Thursday’s by-election in this Southern Ontario riding, a Progressive Conservative stronghold for more than two decades, had found a receptive ear in Mr. Day – and a perceptive eye, too.

“I’m seeing way too many NDP signs around the neighbourhood, but not many Liberal signs,” Mr. Day noted as he ordered a red Liberal sign for his front lawn.

Ontario’s technology hub, home to two universities, a college and BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion, has long been the nearly exclusive election battleground of the Conservatives and the Liberals. Not so in this campaign.

Capitalizing on strife between the governing Liberals and the province’s teachers and other public-sector unions, the NDP and its candidate, Catherine Fife, former president of the Ontario School Boards Association, have turned the Kitchener-Waterloo by-election into a tight three-way contest.

The most recent public opinion polling by Forum Research had Tory contender Tracey Weiler, a business consultant, a Wilfrid Laurier University instructor and a former manager at RIM, in the lead with 34 per cent support, while the Liberals and the NDP were tied for second, each garnering 30 per cent.

With polls showing the Liberals ahead in the Vaughan by-election, also slated for Sept. 6 after veteran Grit MPP Greg Sorbara announced his retirement in August, Kitchener-Waterloo matters more than ever.

The dynamics of power in the Ontario Legislature could be determined here. If the Liberals win Vaughan and Kitchener-Waterloo, Premier Dalton McGuinty will regain the majority government his party lost in last October’s provincial election. A majority, even a slim one, would give the Liberals greater rein to push forward their political agenda.

“It’s up for grabs,” veteran political observer Peter Woolstencroft, who teaches at the University of Waterloo, said of the local race.hoganscarpe vale la pena buying. “I think the big question is what will public-sector voters do? Will they be motivated to stay with the Liberals … or will they move to the NDP?”

If Mr. Davis is feeling the weight of Liberal majority hopes on his shoulders, he’s not showing it or talking about it. “This by-election is historic,” Ms. Fife said in an interview. “I think the voters feel a responsibility to determine what kind of government we’re going to have in the province of Ontario.”

The Kitchener-Waterloo by-election was triggered when long-time Conservative MPP Elizabeth Witmer resigned in April to become chairwoman of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, a provincial government appointment. She was a Red Tory and a popular MPP, representing the riding for 22 years.

Ms. Weiler faces a much tougher battle. She has been door knocking almost daily for more than two months. She believes her campaign has set a local Conservative lawn-sign record, 1,400 and counting. She said she’s not feeling any extra pressure to maintain the Tory winning streak in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Getting supporters to the polls on voting day will be key for all parties. By-elections tend to have lower turnout. Campaigning for this one has occurred during summer vacations and as parents focus on preparing their children for school.

“We’re not taking anything for granted. We are working hard to keep this riding,” Ms. Weiler said. “We have the opportunity here to send the government a message that it is time for change.”

Bobby V. leads Bosox in race to the bottom

You can never say for certain that a team has given up, but the Red Sox are making it awfully tempting.

They've lost the first seven games on this latest West Coast swing, which arrived at the tail end of a five week-long skid that saw them plummet from 3 1/2 games out of a potential playoff spot to the depths of the American League East - and toward even more historic lows.

Wondering who to blame? Good luck. In the race to the bottom, it's become harder by the day to figure out who cares less, the players, manager Bobby Valentine, or his bosses.

Things got so bad this past weekend that Valentine not only showed up late to prepare for Friday's game in Oakland, his players responded by losing 20-2. That attitude was still very much on display when the team arrived Monday for the start of a three-game series in Seattle, where owner John Henry and general manager Ben Cherington caught up with the club to get a look at the sinking ship. Boston lost the series opener to the Mariners 4-1 on Monday.

The only news to emerge thus far was hardly welcome for most Red Sox fans. Henry told the Boston Herald he remained ''resolute'' that Valentine would keep his job until the end of the season.

''What do you think we talked about? Art? Liverpool? We talked about baseball, our team, what he's concerned with, what I deal with,'' is how Valentine described their conversation to the newspaper.

''To any of you that are sorry I didn't get fired,'' he added a moment later, ''I'm sorry that you're sorry.offers guccishoes and Loafers for Men,''

On the contrary.

When a team goes south as dramatically as the Red Sox have - for two years running now - about the only suspense to be had over the rest of this season is who gets fired and when.

After Boston's historic collapse pulled the rug out on the postseason a year ago, it seemed unlikely the ballclub could look any more dysfunctional. Then Valentine stepped into the picture.

He started spring training tweaking the rival Yankees, then apologized - sort of - and came down hard on long-serving Red Sox slugger Kevin Youkilis instead. That turned out to be a prelude to Youkilis' departure, which in hindsight turned out to be the first step in dismantling Boston's once-fearsome lineup.

Valentine appeared to have turned things around at the end of July, when the Red Sox beat the Yankees twice in their final at-bat, then took two more from the Tigers to get to 53-51 and within reach of the wild-card.

Less than a month later, the Red Sox haven't sniffed the .500 mark and are flirting with a 90-loss season, something that hasn't happened in nearly 50 years. Ownership gave a strong indication of where things are headed by shipping first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett and injured outfielder Carl Crawford to the Dodgers in an Aug. 25 blockbuster trade that effectively said ''No mas.''

When the front office says the same about Bobby V. remains to be seen.

The 62-year-old Valentine has a year remaining on the two-year contract he signed last December. Since the question no longer seems to be whether Valentine will suffer a similar fate, it might be more interesting to wonder why the club hired him in the first place.

Henry and the rest of the Boston brain trust must have known a culture clash was inevitable, since Francona had effectively turned over the job of policing the Red Sox locker room to a core of veteran players - a task that Valentine has relished everywhere else he managed.

He pretty much talked his way out of jobs previously with the Mets and the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan by calling out opponents, umpires, his players or even his bosses whenever he felt the need - which for Valentine is often.

While that candor generally made Valentine an interesting addition to the broadcast booth, it also helped explain why he hadn't been given charge of a major league clubhouse for the 10 years prior to landing in Boston. If nothing else, his behavior and quotes of late suggest Valentine may be headed back there soon enough.

Speaking of which, Henry, too, has had the benefit of some practice for his next role - apologizing for the mess the Red Sox have become. His Fenway Sports Group also owns storied English Premier League club Liverpool, which is off to its worst start to a season in 50 years.
