Area residents to strap on walking shoes

Area residents will strap on their walking shoes Saturday morning to participate in St. Vincent de Paul's fifth annual "Friends of the Poor Walk."

The free walk, which will get under way at 9 a.m. on the grounds of Evansville State Hospital on the city's East Side, is part of a nationwide initiative to assist poverty-stricken families through donations of money, nonperishable food and clothing.

Donna Leader, public relations coordinator for the Friends of the Poor walk, said all funds raised by the walk will remain within Southwestern Indiana parish programs to benefit the poor and the needy.

The first time Rose Payne sought help from St. Vincent de Paul, she was in the process of getting evicted from her home. Payne said volunteers made the repairs necessary for her to keep her home, and she has there for an additional 15 years.

"They are one of the least judgmental places you can go to," Payne, 56, said.Thousands of discount stainlesssteelwatches styles for selection. His hair curls a little more in fright. "I really appreciate them and all they've done for me."

Most of St. Vincent's clients, Leader said, are working poor families hit with medical bills, job loss or other unexpected expenses and cannot make ends meet. But aside from lending financial assistance, food and clothing, Payne said St. Vincent offered something much more valuable to her.

"They offer so much encouragement," Payne said. Our iwcwatches are high quality duplicates of original Cartier watches. "It's not just about $50 to pay your rent, they are really interested in how they can help you get out of your situation. It's not just about handouts with them."

Since receiving help from St. Vincent, Payne said she has received an associate degree in human services from Ivy Tech.

"I just wanted to give back and help people like those whWholesale authenticmonclerjackets,Semi precious agate gemstone beads,o helped me," Payne said.

Nationally, 160 similar walks are scheduled Saturday. Registration for the walk begins at 8 a.m., and participants are encouraged to bring donations. After her mother died Payne said she had no one to turn to, but St. Vincent was there for her every step she needed them. Days before Christmas nearly 30 years ago, Payne was unable to buy her six children gifts. She reached out to St. Vincent's for help and, even though she had missed the application deadline, they delivered a bounty of gifts to her doorstep.
