Close to 200 people took part in Saturday's event, with Mokau's Wyatt Hutchinson proving the outstanding performer. Clad in rugby shorts and a T-shirt, and running bare-feet, he covered the distance in 1:30:04 - a respectable time for a road half-marathon, let alone having to factor in the agonisingly soft sand and the two chest-deep river crossings.

I envied his wisdom in not wearing any shoes when my waterlogged footwear appeared to quadruple in weight after crossing the Awakino River.

Running along a beach was certainly a test of mental strength when every forward glance reminded me just how far I had to go.

Mokau's characteristic roughly hewn cliffs, wild ocean and black sand created a unique landscape to run through.

Some chirpy encouragement from the LandSAR marshals and a couple of surfcasters pulled me over the finish line in third place just 12 minutes after the barefoot machine. And I'd smoked John Anthony, which no doubt will be the subject of lots of office humour today.

Tamati and co-organisers Mr Bailey, Morgan Garandel and Megan Stewart catered to all age groups and abilities, with 2km, 5km, 10km and half marathon (21km) distances on offer.

Tamati said she was absolutely stoked with how the event ran.

Based on its success this year the Mokau half marathon is set to become a yearly event, Tamati said.

And Taranaki runners can look forward to bigger and better running events in the future, she promised. "We've got a few plans, but that's all under wraps."

The Awakino River Lodge was the main sponsor for the event and all funds went towards the Taranaki Community rescue helicopter and LandSAR.

When it comes to shopping, men are portrayed as having their feet firmly on the ground. What you don’t see is that, lately, they’re wearing suspiciously nice shoes.

Though women’s footwear continues to boast higher worth – $2.6 billion to men’s $2 billion (children’s shoes represent the remaining share) – this is the first time in recent history that the male segment has outpaced its female counterpart in terms of growth.

“We saw it start with apparel; it was all about men purging their closets and adding new looks as they tried to remain relevant, feel young, look young,” she said, recalling 2011 year-end sales figures in which menswear was the only fashion segment to post growth (three per cent). “And now we see the casual shoe following that trend.My new Channel showing you guys how to spot a fake hermesbelt.”
