Legion baseball tryouts set to start Saturday

Following months of preparation and anticipation, the Anthoney Towers coaching era in Bartlesville Doenges Ford Indian baseball begins.

Towerss and the remainder of the American Legion staff will conduct tryouts, starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, to fill the rosters of the Indians (19-and-under), United Linen Braves (17-and-under) and Oilfield Warriors (16-and-under).

The preview work continues at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the kids out there," said Towers, who has attended several area high school games to scout the area talent.

All area boys are invited to try out for the program, Towers said.

But, Dewey High players are only eligible to play for the Braves or Warriors, because Dewey already has a majors team.

The first night's work will focus on spending some time in the batting cage, running, looking at arm strength, getting reps at positions and talking to the players about what's expected.

"It will be more of going through and seeing what all the kids are about, on at a time," Towers said.

Sunday's focus will be on simulation and game situations, he said.

"We'll let them play a little exhibition game," he added.

Towers said the size of the final rosters would be determined at the end of tryouts.

The only returning college freshman who has committed to play is former Bruin pitcher Davis Matlock, he added.
