Neighborhood Watch group forms in McConnell

Two recent home invasions in rural Stephenson County have prompted residents in and around McConnell to form a new Neighborhood Watch group to better protect local citizens.

June 28, at the United Methodist Church on Halbert Street in McConnell. Residents from throughout the area are invited to attend, including those from Cedarville, Orangeville, Red Oak, Buena Vista, McConnell, Damascus, and Oneco.

In addition, representatives from the rural fire departments in Orangeville, Cedarville, and McConnell have been asked to attend, as have Cedarville and Orangeville Village Board members and all Stephenson County Board members and candidates.

“We’re going to work together on this with the (Stephenson County) Sheriff’s Office and hopefully we’ll get more volunteers,” said James Schultz of rural McConnell, a County Board candidate for District I who is helping organize the Neighborhood Watch program.

Schultz will be the keynote speaker at Thursday’s meeting. Also expected to speak are Stephenson County Sheriff David Snyders and Chief Deputy Todd Welch of the sheriff’s office.

The most recent home invasion took place on May 29 at a residence in the 7000 block of North Scheider Road in rural McConnell. A woman was home at the time of the burglary/home invasion and she interrupted the crime while it was in progress. The suspects fled when they were confronted by her.

Sheriff’s deputies say the same two perpetrators may have committed a similar crime on May 23 or 24 in Durand.
