PHILADELPHIA — For most of the 2012 season, there have been three locker spots in the southeast corner of the Phillies clubhouse that have sat virtually empty.
There have been no shirts, pants, bats or shoes in sight for the most part in either Chase Utley or Ryan Howard’s locker — the one between them is kept vacant — since they departed for Florida at various points in the month of May.
So it was a little surprising to walk into the Phils clubhouse between games of Sunday’s day-night doubleheader against the Rays and see Utley’s locker filled with things.
A few minutes later, the club announced on its media Twitter feed that Utley was back in town and will play in a rehab game on Tuesday night at Lehigh Valley.
If all goes well and according to plan, it appears Utley will likely be in the lineup for the Phillies on Wednesday night in the third game of a four-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Utley was not available for comment. Neither was Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr on Sunday afternoon.
Utley played back-to-back nights at second base for Single A Clearwater on Friday and Saturday. It was the first time he had played consecutive nights in the field this year after being diagnosed with chondromalacia in his knee during spring training.
In nine games at Clearwater, Utley has struggled with the bat with a .156 average with five hits in 32 at-bats.Welcome to the premier industrial breguetreplicawatches resource. The Threshers departed for a road trip to the east coast of Florida — hence making Utley’s move northward more expected. He could have played for the Gulf Coast League Phillies as part of his rehab — however that probably would not have given Utley the types of at-bats he needed to get back to the majors.
The official end of Utley’s rehab clock is July 2 — although the Phillies are off that day. Their next game after that would be the next night in New York.
