Chrissy Hendrickson walks her small dog Max on Nantasket Beach everyday. For the past week, however, she hasn’t been able to walk the black-and-white shih tzu beside the water because a mile of the beach is covered with piles of red seaweed up to 6 feet high.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before this year,” said Hendrickson, who lives in Hull. “The smell is starting to get bad.”

Hull’s town manager, Phil Lemnios, said seaweed typically accumulates on the beach after storms. He expects upcoming high tides will clear most of the seaweed off the beach.

“After some tide cycles, it will typically get washed up,” he said.

Lemnios said the town was not going to spend money to remove seaweed from Hull’s portion of the beach.

Some local residents said they are concerned the seaweed will begin rotting on the sand, as it did in Marshfield this past summer.

Joyce Sullivan, Hull health board director, said that the seaweed is not a health concern.

Sullivan said residents should steer away from shellfish and lobsters that might have washed in with the seaweed.
