The cops are looking for a woman in her sixties and a young man who are well-dressed and frequent jewellery shops in central and south Delhi and dupe them by replacing the jewellery with fakes while deciding which ones to buy.

The fraud came to fore when a CP-based jeweller, during the annual audit held a few days ago, stumbled upon a different ring kept in the showcase instead of the original diamond ring, an officer said.

Then we checked the ring with a testing machine where it turned out to be a fake. We asked the staff about it, but nobody seemed to have any idea," the complainant said.

The showroom management started scanning CCTV footages and found one from early February that showed a youth in his early twenties and an elderly woman having a conversation with the showroom employee who was holding the ring in his hand.

"It was visible that the man asked the employee to check the price of the ring and as he went away from the counter, the man passed the ring to the woman who hid the original in her clothes and replaced it with a fake one. After that they left," a police officer said.

The jeweller then approached the police and handed over the CD of the footage along with the fake ring. The cops registered an FIR under sections of cheating (420) and began investigations.
