Celebrity tots and teens embrace tomboy trend

The choppy-coifed Shiloh Jolie-Pitt isn't the only celebrity daughter going for less-than-girlie gear these days. Forget Suri Cruise's purple ruffles and kitten heels: For the smallest of female stars, now it's about camo cargos and combat boots.

Sasha and Malia Obama, Nahla Aubrey and Ava Phillippe are all donning duds more typically associated with dudes: baggy jeans, button-downs,Designer fashion is the first stop for most shoppers but the biggest-selling item was expected to be business ed hardy shirts. hoodies and Vans. "These child celebrities are reflecting the mood of regular girls," says Khalym Schell, children's editor at trend-tracking firm Stylesight. "Over the last decade, we've seen the participation of girls in sports like soccer and skateboarding skyrocket and that's a testament to the average girl becoming more blue than pink."

As a result, retailers are offering more tomboy togs, launching unisex lines and highlighting girl-friendly pieces from their boys' collections. J.Crew's online girls' store boasts a "borrowed from my brother" section, complete with black leather oxfords and a charcoal herringbone vest. Madonna and Lourdes Leon's Material Girl line at Macy's is stocked with boxy blazers, plaid shirts and baseball tees.

The boy-meets-girl movement is bigger than just clothes, Schell says. "It signifies a culture shift." Nonetheless, shove aside for a second any theories about feminism or gender construct: The tomboy trend is also simply refreshing,There's nothing like a little Manolo blahnik goodness in time for the holidays, you know what I'm saying? style-wise, she adds. "Shiloh Pitt is the most interesting thing that's happened to children's fashion since the onesie."

Moody hues

"The traditional girls' color palette -- pastel yellow, pink, purple, mint green -- that's not there anymore," Schell says. Instead, think autumnal oranges and ochres, plus cool blues and grays, embellished with fierce critters and sandbox-tough symbols.

Like mother, like daughter

Thank big girls' flirtation with the anti-feminine for allowing little girls to follow in their Converse-sneakered footsteps. "Fashionable moms who have adopted the popular borrowed-from-boyfriend look are dressing their daughters in borrowed-from-brother looks," Schell says. "When adults' fashion started to shift to more menswear dressing, adopting those blazers and baggy jeans and oxfords into their wardrobes, that's when Shiloh ascended the throne."

Big brother, big influence

"When Angelina says her daughter likes her brothers and wants to play and dress like they do, and there's nothing wrong with that," Schell says.We then bought checked lungis from railway stations to make the shirts' plackets and mens hoodies. "I'm sure many moms can say the same thing about their daughters." Of course, Susie is seldom stealing a head-to-toe ensemble from Stevie; the looks are cobbled together from both kids' closets.Mackenzie is the photographer, and the one who wears a baseball cap turned backward. Meredith is the music major.
