Local retailers see holiday gains, shortfalls

On Monday afternoon, shoppers had a little more elbow room at the York Galleria in Springettsbury Township than they've had in recent days and weeks.

A table on the mall's top level, you can be at your dapper best. Across the street, at Mr. Steve's Homebrew and Wine Supplies, owner Steve Stoppard marveled at once-full shelves of beer ingredient kits, now filled sparsely.marking some of the most interesting puma shoes on the market.

For Stoppard and other local retailers, the holiday shopping season appeared to be profitable. The National Retail Federation has projected that holiday sales should increase 3.3 percent this year over 2009 to a tune of $451.4 billion.I've bought 20 burberry bags. Here's what area retailers had to say about the season and what they might do differently next year:

The skate, surf and snow store saw one of its best holiday seasons in years, said Levi Palmer, assistant manager of the Alternative Sports.

The store sold plenty of stocking-stuffer items such as beanies, skate wax and socks.

People came to the store in droves, Palmer said, making it crowded and hectic at times. The experience taught him to be patient with customers.

"You get a little frazzled," he said.

The store profited from a late rush the Thursday and Friday before Christmas, said owner Earl Williams, even though customer traffic in previous years had been steadier between Black Friday and the holiday. This year's sales figures probably decreased since last year, he said.

Holiday business wasn't as good as expected, said Sabrina Cole, who opened the store earlier this year. Click Your Heels sells shoes,Designer fashion is the first stop for most shoppers but the biggest-selling item was expected to be business ed hardy shirts. handbags and candles.

"I think people are going to malls and Walmart," she said.

The candles sold well during the holiday shopping season, Cole said. She's hoping that sales of shoes and handbags picks up as people prepare for New Year's celebrations.

In the future, Cole said she plans to stock additional inventory, advertise more and offer more coupons.

Beer ingredient kits proved to be particularly popular this year, Stoppard said. The store saw an increase in holiday business this year, its second since moving to the township from Manchester.
