HPU honors Kirst with Hall of Fame induction

Almost everywhere Melinda Kirst looks, she sees a familial Howard Payne connection. She also looks closely when someone with HPU connections is interested in a coaching position.

As one of 12 women athletic directors in the state she frankly admitted, "When I look at resumes, if I can hire a Howard Payne person I know what type of person I will get. They produce great teachers, coaches and ministers."

Kirst is one of three who will be inducted into the next class of the HPU Hall of Fame. Joining her will be all-conference football player Jerry Miller and football/track star Stuart Burleson, one of the last Yellow Jacket scholarship athletes.

Kirst, the athletic director at Lockhart High School, graduated from Howard Payne in 1978. Her earliest memories are being the freshman class representative in a committee of four that went to the HPU president and informed him they wanted intercollegiate athletics for women.

They were told, "as long as you don't ask for scholarship money." The response of the four women: "We don't care."

Kirst was on the first Lady Jackets volleyball team that was started her sophomore year. Interestingly, she said that her high school alma mater, San Antonio Jefferson, started volleyball during her sophomore year as well.

"We had a very good core of female athletes (at HPU)," Kirst said. "All three years we had a winning season. My junior year, we qualified for nationals but they didn't have the money to send us."

After earning a physical education degree, Kirst was an assistant coach for two years at Smithson Valley. She was head coach for one year before moving to San Antonio Clark for three years as head coach. She took a break from 1984 to 1989 to get married and gave birth to daughters Stephanie and Andrea. She returned as coach at St. Joseph in Victoria and then was the first coach at what became Victoria Memorial. Her daughters played volleyball through eighth grade and spent their high school years as their mother's statisticians.

In 2008, Kirst moved to Lockhart as volleyball coach for one year before being named the ninth athletic director in the state. She finished with 477 high school wins but said there is still a fire burning in her to coach.Whether you going to practice and need athletic shoes and a sport bag or just lounging at the house puma shoes and PUMA clothing have got you covered. However, if she does coach again she said it would be at only one place — Howard Payne.

As far as HPU connections, her brother Larry Venable graduated in 1975. His children, Scott (2002) and Melissa (2004) are graduates as well. Melissa Venable now coaches volleyball at South Garland High.

"I have great memories of my years there," Kirst said. "I had some good job offers coming out of Howard Payne.Air max 360 is loved by the majority of athletes and the general public people. Of course now,Nike shox are a series of Nike shoes. you can see the effects of Title IX. Women have many more opportunities."

Kirst made the most of hers — 35 years ago when she was one of the pioneers of women's athletics at Howard Payne.
