Library's Summer Reading Program Goes Global

Children can keep up with their reading, earn prizes and enjoy a passport to a world of free events during Pierce County Library System's Summer Reading program.

Kids, ages 0-18, will travel through stories from around the world all summer long at the Pierce County Library System, the largest provider of reading resources for children in Pierce County.

The Summer Reading program for children and teens runs from June 18 to Sept. 4 at all Pierce County libraries and bookmobiles. More information is available in the libraries and bookmobiles, as well as online @www.piercecountylibrary.org, search site: summer reading.

“This year's summer reading theme of ‘One World, Many Stories' echoes the library system's mission ‘to bring the world of information and imagination to all people of our community',” said Neel Parikh, executive director of the library system. “The books and events this year will bring people, places and cultures from around the world to children here in Pierce County.”

With the “One World, Many Stories” theme, the library will work with children, ages 3-12, and bring them a world of fun, free events including magical imaginary journeys, animal tales, and crafts and treasures. When kids read 20 minutes a day, for a total of 10 hours, they will earn a prize, which includes a free pass to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium or Northwest Trek, while supplies last.

More children participate in public library summer reading programs than play Little League baseball. A recent study by Dominican University found that students who take part in their local library's summer reading program significantly improve their reading skills. Instead of losing knowledge and skills during the summer months, kids who attend reading programs actually show gains.

Registration may be required for some events; contact libraries for details. Rotaries of Pierce County are the primary sponsor for Pierce County Library's Summer Reading program, along with donations to Pierce County Library Foundation and Friends of the Libraries.
