Look sharp in shorts this summer

Shorts don't always have to be khaki, denim or black.

Add some pizzazz to summer shorts with bold hues, plaids, polka dots, flowers -- even embellishments.

"Shorts are a sure sign of warm weather, so have fun with them," says Kate Dimmock, People Style Watch fashion director. "The nice thing about shorts this summer is there is a silhouette for everyone. Sometimes, women find it daunting to find the right pair of shorts, but there are so many options out there, they can definitely find something they like and that looks good.

"Shorts have replaced the mini skirt."

Take a cue from Hollywood, Dimmock says. The go-to outfit of female celebrities is a pair of floral-print loose-cut shorts with an oversized tee. It's kind of like a uniform for these women, she says.

Ethnic prints, which have been seen in pants across the fashion industry and along runways, have been transformed into shorts, Dimmock says.

If you prefer to stay with denim, opt for a bright hue such as red, yellow or bold pink.

There are many lengths of shorts this season. If you don't have the shape to wear short shorts, go for a to-the-knee option, or even a slouchy version.

"Every length looks good right now," Dimmock says. "Calvin Klein has a short that is to the knee and cuffed that would be flattering on any woman."

Shorts are like sundresses, she says. They are pieces of clothing that really say summer and that you most likely wear only during the summer.

Shorts usually aren't for the office, unless you work in a creative environment. For those women who do wear shorts to work, a shorts suit can look great. If your legs are bare, you should keep most of the top part of your body covered, says Lindsay Huggins, senior fashion market editor for Self magazine.

"There was a time when it was difficult to find the right shorts, but not this summer," Huggins says. "Last summer, short shorts were in, and that was not a style for most women. But not this year. There are so many great choices in various lengths that we can all find a pair of great shorts."

Bean product line manager for wovens.

"There are some new plaids, madras patchworks, refreshed seersuckers and shorts with stretch for added comfort," she says. "The madras this year is both bright and classic, and our customer is loving it. We have also added pops of color and novelty in some of our key programs in shorts."

For example, the sunwashed canvas short from L.L. Bean has options in nautical red and boreal blue. Or try a chino in glen green and navy with an embroidered pink anchor.

If you are afraid to go all out with a bold pattern or print, opt for one that has more neutral blocks of colors, such as brown and tan and off-white, so you still get the style but it's not too much. And you can wear a solid color on top to keep the look more mild, Huggins says.

Cuffs and a paper-bag waist hide some flaws.

"Or, you can go all out," Huggins says. "By paring a bright top or mixing and matching prints and patterns, you can really have fun with shorts this summer. I love mixing prints and patterns. Let your shorts reflect your personality."
