"Having the most famous couple in the world land on your doorstep as their first public appearance since getting married is an ideal opportunity for us."

In terms of national coming-out parties, he describes this as the equivalent of the Olympics - if the Games travelled to half a dozen cities across the country.

Will and Kate's itinerary is a mix of iconic and cutting-edge, or offbeat Canadian experiences. They'll be welcomed in Calgary for the Stampede with traditional white Smithbilt cowboy hats before touring a leading medical research centre; visit a 19th-century fort and a youth homeless shelter in Quebec City; and take in both First Nations drumming and a game of street hockey in Yellowknife.

There are more than 1,300 journalists - including hundreds of international media from as far away as China and India - registered to cover this visit, and Kevin MacLeod, who is responsible for planning royal tours as the Queen's Canadian secretary, says every detail is minutely planned to best show off the country.

"We have to be conscious of the fact that through the lens of a camera, yes we'll have the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the foreground, but what's in the background?" he says.However, in recent years, more runners are tossing traditional asics shoes altogether.
