Patagonia vs. Goodwill: outdoor clothing on the ritz vs. on the cheap

The Ferrari of outdoor clothing designers, Patagonia lives up to its reputation: expensive, excellent, elegant enough to belong in upscale Portland bistros. But the lightly used Honda of outdoor clothing -- secondhand gear from Goodwill or Next Adventure -- can also get you from the trailhead to tree line with style.

In my quest for fabulous and reasonably priced outdoor clothing, I found that outfits at opposite ends of the price spectrum can actually offer reasonably similar functionality.

Of course, the shopping experience is a world apart.

At the Patagonia store in the Pearl District (907 N.W. Irving St.),we sale the ed hardy Shirt in low price but with high quality. carefully fixed light angles intensify the latest hues of the down,Did you know that Burroughs once did a nike air max commercial? organic cotton and H2No clothing. The rustic wide plank floors and warehouse-like brick accents make you feel like you've been transported to a chic bar in Bozeman, Mont.

A brood of robust-looking sales staff immediately attends customers; their cheeks are probably flushed from that weekend's backcountry ski bushwhack above Pocket Creek. With a scruffy beard or a flamboyant tattoo peeking out from underneath a shirt collar, just enough to blur a clean-cut image, they want to answer every question and concern. It's great.

Not that Patagonia is the only high-end, high-quality brand out there. (Have you seen the price tag on an Arc'teryx parka lately?) But because of the high prices and very visible logo, the brand gets nicknamed "Pata-Gucci," and not always affectionately.

Store manager Erin Lyle rebuts, "I think the term is used by people who don't know the background of the company" -- a background that has its roots with then-dirtbag climber (and that is an affectionate term) Yvon Chouinard selling hand-forged pitons out of the back of his car at Yosemite in the late 1950s.

The company gets points from customers for committing funding to environmental and social stewardship causes, and it created the Common Threads Recycling program.

"It's high quality and high planetary return for my money," says former Outward Bound instructor and teacher Kate Gessford.

But times are tight, and many outdoorsy types without platinum credit cards will be relieved to find ultra-deals at "The Bins," the Goodwill outlet in Southeast (1750 S.E. Ochoco St.Looking for Juicy couture wholesale?). It's a giant warehouse (a real warehouse, not a romanticized warehouse) building with a mega-parking lot.

The bins are a free-for-all that draw everyone from hipsters to the homeless. There aren't enough shopping carts to go around. Row after row of clothes, bedding and stuff are heaped in lumpy mounds without any organization and are sold by the pound. The place is a holding tank for thousands of people odors.

Many bin-sages advise patience and an empty, open mind while rifling through the motley piles of donated items. Yet, when I went to look for outdoor clothing, I spent just half an hour and five bucks and left with name-brand clothing from Columbia and Nike.

There is a spectrum of other options between Goodwill and Patagonia. The nice new Goodwill "boutique" on Hawthorne (3557 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd.) has higher prices ($10 for a pair of pants) but it also has organized a little activewear section where I found tons of name-brand outdoor clothing in good shape.

Next Adventure (426 S.E. Grand Ave.) is also a draw for frugal climber-hiker-bikers. While its new upstairs clothing can be slightly lower-priced than the norm, it's the used-only basement where the deals are found, especially on camping gear,Buy ed hardy jeans from our shop, we will make you have a different feeling in this summer. hiking boots, climbing shoes and ski equipment. You can also sort through racks of name-brand used clothing, though you will pay more here than if you find it at the Goodwill boutique.

Will you find the latest and greatest of outdoor fashion on the secondhand rack? Most likely, no. Can you find safe, functional, complementary outdoor clothing on the cheap? Yes. You can always walk the middle road and buy a couple of flashy wardrobe items,This Adidas Jacket will battle the rain, wind and cold weather so you can focus on the game. then fill in the rest with thrifty choices.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure the coyotes and squirrels will think you quite dashing.
