Cambridge in March to qualify for the worlds

Kalan Evans is so attached to his bike that he is forbidden to ride until he's finished his homework.

It fails to surprise that the Muriwai five-year-old boasts the national BMX champion title in the five years and under category.

"He used to scoot around Muriwai and I'd chase behind him," mum Meagan Evans says.

Kalan moved on to a pedal bike at the age of two and took up BMX riding just a year later.

The Huapai District School student is now chasing the national and international BMX championships for 2013.

He aims to win the nationals in Cambridge in March to qualify for the worlds at Auckland's Vector Arena in July.

"He's competitive and so into riding his bike," Miss Evans says.

His strategy to win the worlds is simple: "Go low on the corners and pedal fast."

Miss Evans agrees.

"He likes to go fast around the track and get big air.

"He rides pretty hard."

The champion has escaped breaking bones but his mountain biking mum has not shared his luck.

Miss Evans broke a collarbone after a car knocked her off the bike.

Kalan beat 17 other riders and won all five races at this year's North Island BMX championships.

He rides three days a week at the North Harbour track and races in venues around the country most weekends.
