Area residents asked to help out fire victims

Area residents are taking action - in the form of a clothing drive and a fundraising meal - to help those affected by recent wildfires.

The clothing drive is being coordinated by David Miller, a farmer and cowboy as well as a volunteer with the Kress Fire Department. Miller is asking area residents to donate items that will be delivered to the families affected by the fires in Randall and Potter counties.

Items needed include clothes,Learn all of th facts you need to know before yopu shop for Juicy couture wholesale online. blankets, pots and pans, dishes, shoes, toys, drinks, snacks "or anything else you would like to donate," Miller said.

Drop-off spots are the Plainview Fire Station No. 2 at 10th and Quincy and Evans Grain at the corner of FM 145 and Highway 87 in Kress.

"I really appreciate them letting us use them as drop-off points," Miller said.

Donations will be picked up Saturday and delivered to Amarillo.

Driven by high winds, wildfires destroyed 70 homes and 110 other structures in Potter and Randall counties, scorched more than 25,000 acres and caused minor or major damage to an additional 20 homes and 25 other structures. Miller said he decided to put the drive together at the spur of the moment.

"I don't know anybody who lost a home.Gucci men shoes from the latest collection. I just wanted to help out," he said. "The Red Cross and The Salvation Army are taking donations and some companies in Amarillo, but I didn't know of anybody around here, so I figured I may as well do it."

According to Floydada firefighter Corey Johnston, the Motley County Volunteer Fire Department is out of funds after a fire threatened the city of Matador on Sunday, prompting officials to evacuate residents. Seven homes were confirmed damaged and one destroyed as 41,000 acres burned.

"They need operating money," Johnston said. "I'm sure they'll get some FEMA money (or other government assistance) eventually, but we want to help them get back on their feet right now."

He said members of the Motley County fire department were using their own money to pay for fuel in fire trucks.

Although the blaze is under control, Johnston said the fire was still being fought as of noon Wednesday.

He said Floydada's 25-person volunteer department sent three crews to assist in eight-hour shifts in Motley County. At the height of the blaze, Johnston said close to 100 firefighters from neighboring communities were on hand as well as dozens of pieces of ground-moving equipment.

"It was one of the most well-conceived operations I've been a part of," he said.

As for the hamburger meal, Johnston said they're requesting a $6 donation per meal, "but we'll take anything."

The Floydada firefighters are hoping to raise $5,000.

Johnston said donations also are being accepted and can be mailed to the Floyd ada Volunteer Fire Department, 114 W. Virginia St., Floydada, TX 79235.
