Jeans on the outside, panche on the inside

When journalist-turned-writer Aditi De edited a book on Bangalore she called it Multiple City. She also called it a "reluctant metropolis" and mentioned in her foreword how each person she interacted with "seemed to espouse a private vision of Bangalore" and thanked some for helping her discover a "Bengaluru within Bangalore".
Now, for someone who didn't know that the city had a nagara devate — city deity — Annamma, she had covered quite a distance in discovering Bangalore's layers by the time she finished the book.
It takes some effort and time for anyone to understand this city. Especially its linguistic nuances. The organisers feel the "vernacular press" is not something to be taken seriously. So they don't send invites to anyone speaking Kannada. Be it Vengaboys or Enrique Iglesias or Deep Purple or Bollywood stars...the Kannada media is ignored or sidestepped because it is `decided' that Kannada-speaking people do not want to know about it or that publicity in Kannada media is inconsequential. I once called up the event coordinator for a press-pass for an event hosting an international artist. He agreed to deliver it immediately and even asked if a photographer's pass was also required. When I gave him the name of the Kannada paper I was representing, he immediately said, "Sorry, no pass," and hung up.It seems that jordan 6 rings in coming up for almost everyone including boys and girls. Two worlds in one city
On the other hand the big digital divide keeps the Kannada media in a perpetual state of suspicion. Like a senior journalist put it "until the day the Kannada papers think Bryan Adams in the city is front page news things will not change".
He also observed how when looking at same day editions of a Kannada and an English paper, it makes you feel that you are in two different cities because of the preferences of news covered.
The ad market goes along with the trend and the Kannada media caters to ads for cookers, soap nut powder, agarbattis while all the up-market consumer items are endorsed in the English papers. The spaces have not moved an inch in the past 50 years and show no signs of change either. The percentage of participation of Kannada media in the market economics is pathetically low. A survey revealed that half of the TV viewing audience watches Hindi programmes whereas Kannada recorded a mere 4.6 percentage of the viewership. Hence, all this high-brow talk of the future of the media being in the languages seems far fetched. All hotels that advertise exotic buffets for Rs 800, or Rs 1,000 advertise only in English papers because they think Kannada-speaking people do not spend that kind of money on food. No travel firm advertises in Kannada papers because it thinks Kannadigas don't travel.
