Boots That Work So Neatly

Gucci men shoes from the latest collection.

THERE is no end to the predictions about the toll that global warming will take on our naughty little planet. The jury seems to be out, though, as to its effect on style, the high-waters at Thom Browne notwithstanding.

Still, one thing was made clear by this winter's record snowfalls: men need boots. What is not as clear is what boots. A vast majority of men's boots (work boots, cowboy boots, hiking boots) are sturdily made and mean business. But for the man who wants something that can pass muster in a place of business, that vast majority is out.

"We get this question all the time," said Nick Sullivan, Esquire's fashion director. "Men want boots they can wear to work, something that's less company-guy than a dress shoe. But if it's got a big Dainite sole and a thick upper, it's hard to make that work. We always say, ‘If you've got clumpy boots, you need clumpy clothes.' But if you're wearing a proper worsted suit, your boots have to reflect that, with a finer grade of leather, a finer cut and a smaller, thinner sole."

Until recently, those boots were not easy to track down. Historically, the kind of work that calls for boots is manly, outdoorsy stuff: loggin', weldin' and ropin.' Less manly work (typin', conference-callin' and lunchin') has been the province of the dress shoe.

Even when hipsters took up venerable work boots like Wescos, Wolverines and Red Wings, hoping to pass as someone who could saw a log or jump a car, the boots didn't go to work — at least not in an office. The only reasonable shoe-boot hybrid for the office-bound was the Chelsea boot, a sleek Mod job that you pulled on or zipped up. If you weren't going for a whiff of 1960s British cool, you were out of luck.

Now, though, more and more boots are turning up that meld the true grit of the work boot with the well-heeled finesse of a classic dress shoe. Bob Clark, vice president of the Alden Shoe Company, said that the number of men's boots it now offers is almost 10 times what it was three years ago, ranging from the plain (classic, military lace-ups) to the ornamental (full-on wingtip boots), and in as many finishes, colors and leathers.

At Leffot, the men's shoe boutique on Christopher Street that has gained a following with its sophisticated inventory, the boots range from slimmed-down leather-soled Wolverine work boots ($325) to handmade Edward Green lace-ups in calf leather with Dainite soles ($1,Keep your muscles warm before and after the match in this stylish Adidas Jacket.275).

As suited as they all are for nasty weather, their popularity appears to be driven by other considerations.

"It's a generational thing," Mr. Clark said. "The customer who's come to us for these boots is a guy in his late 20s and early 30s, a guy who we wouldn't expect to see coming to Alden for another decade."

Leffot's owner, Steven Taffel, let's not forget mutilating bunnies for sport and ed hardy shirts. added that dress boots have a distinct edge in versatility over dress shoes.

"We really try to sell shoes that guys will wear as much as possible," he said. "So these are something guys can wear in a corporate environment and something they can wear on weekends, too."

Joshua Bingaman, a former sneaker dealer who started his own line of handmade work boots 18 month ago, in Austin, Tex., said that the demand for the conservative and versatile dress boots in his quirky-cool line, called Helm, had persuaded him to expand in that direction next season.

"I've always had a boot that I would use to bridge that casual-to-office look," said Edward Ebani, a fashion executive in New York, who bought two pairs of boots — one by Edward Green and one by Alden — at Leffot earlier this season. "But in the past there weren't many options. Now it seems like almost every designer and company is doing some version of them, which is great. I wear them to the office, wear them out at night."

The kicker is that they're great for the weird winters that the future seems to have in store.
