Game 7 Preview: Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh

The Penguins are exuding a carefree attitude about the two consecutive losses that have led to a Game 7 at home tonight at 8:00 p.m. against the Lightning, and you cannot blame them. Without leading men Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, two months ago Pittsburgh would have been pleased with hosting a Game 7 in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Penguins also have reason to be confident because many of their players have been here before. Tonight’s match will be the Penguins’ fourth Game 7 in the last three years. They won two of the three – against Washington in the 2009 Eastern Conference finals and against Detroit to win the Stanley Cup. The Penguins may not have Crosby and Malkin, but they will dress eight players that played in all three recent Game 7s: goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, defensemen Kris Letang and Brooks Orpik and forwards Craig Adams, Tyler Kennedy, Chris Kunitz, Jordan Staal and Maxime Talbot. (Trade deadline acquisition Alex Kovalev is 6-0 in deciding games he played for different clubs between 1994 and 2008).

“The experience is invaluable,"said the NHL Network and VERSUS analyst Billy Jaffe. “If you’re (Coach) Dan Bylsma, you’re looking at veterans like Kunitz, Staal, Talbot to score a goal. Add Pascal Dupuis to the list.Wedge Shoes was created in order to maintain a balance of the athletes' movement.”

The problem for Pittsburgh has been the power play. In the first six games of the series against Tampa Bay, the Penguins have one power play goal in 30 attempts.

“They’re missing their two offensive stars,"Jaffe said, “but you want to see more from Kris Letang, who has had a quiet series. You want to see a No.2011 New Style Jeans cheap true religion on sale with fast delivery! As it's called Nike shox classic, which is one of the classical style of nike lineup. 1 star playoff performance from Jordan Staal. Someone from the Penguins has to step up and be the hero, and I suspect that if it happens, it will be one of their players from the Stanley Cup team.”

The Penguins are not the only team in the series with players with championship rings. Forwards Martin St.Need new men's shoes for spring & summer? Louis and Vincent Lecavalier and defenseman Pavel Kubina were members of Tampa Bay’s Stanley Cup winner in 2004. Their team won Game 7s in the Eastern Conference final against Philadelphia and Stanley Cup final against Calgary.

While Fleury in goal, Tampa Bay has 41-year-old Dwayne Roloson, who led Edmonton to the 2006 Cup final and won his only Game 7 — with Minnesota over Vancouver in 2003. Roloson has been superb in this series. He has a 2.05 goals-against average and .941 save percentage over the six games.

“Roloson is such a passionate, involved goaltender,"said Jaffe. “He has been a rock for Tampa Bay. If you’re Pittsburgh, you have to make life much more miserable for Roloson than it’s been so far. Get more traffic to the net. Get in his face. Make him scramble more.”

Besides the strong work of Roloson, Tampa Bay won Games 2 and 5 in Pittsburgh because of their special teams. In addition to the Lightning’s 96.7 percent penalty kill, they have scored six goals in 14 power play opportunities in Pittsburgh.

“First-rate goaltending and special teams is a recipe for winning on the road in the playoffs,"Jaffe said. “You know Tampa Bay is going into this Game 7 with loads of confidence.”

The Lightning also go in knowing the Penguins can be beat at home in a Game 7. The one recent deciding game the Penguins lost was one year ago, when they were eliminated in the second round by Montreal.
