The city police along with gold ornaments
manufacturers from Raja Street, Oppanakkara Street, Vysial Street and other
streets, plans to install CCTVs to thwart robbers. The decision comes in the
wake of the recent attack and robbery of 1.5 kg gold ornaments from a gold
manufacturing unit at Pavizham street in the city on January 7. The exact
locations for installing the cameras will be finalised in the coming days after
the police officials inspect and survey these streets.
"The cameras will be placed at strategic points to ensure total surveillance of the street and the shops day and night. We will also monitor the footage from our police control room,We offer latest wide collection of replica skycycling," said A K Viswanathan, city police commissioner.
He added that the police would instruct all gold manufacturing units to avoid bulk storage of gold ornaments inside the premises. Meanwhile, Coimbatore Gold Ornaments Manufacturers Association has decided to install 45 CCTVs and speed dome cameras at Raja Street,What used to be a winter staple for chinabeads, Edayar Street, Kempatty Colony, Thomas Parak, Ashok Nagar, Chetti Street, Ponniahrajapuram, Samy Iyyer Puthu Veethi, Selvapuram.
"If we don't install cameras, we would not be able to ensure safer environment for our gold ornaments kept at the manufacturing unit. We have passed a resolution that the entire gold manufacturing unit should install CCTVs. If the unit fails to install CCTVs, then they could not expect any help from the association," said B Muthu Venkatram, president of Coimbatore Gold Ornaments Manufacturers' Association.
Venkatram also added that the association has planned to approach the residential welfare association to fix speed dome cameras on the important streets which have more number of gold manufacturing units. "The speed dome camera costs Rs 45,000. So we need to invest atleast Rs 18 lakh," said Venkatram.
On January 7, around 9.30 pm, two robbers had gone to a gold ornament manufacturing unit at Pavizham street in the city and assaulted the owner of the unit, B Vikash, 34. He sustained cut injuries on his head and his cousin brother M Raju, 35 sustained minor injuries. The robbers escaped with 1.5 kg of gold ornaments. The city police have formed eleven special teams to nab the culprits.
