The pair left with a haul of jewellery

The men wearing hooded tops walked into the ROX store on George Street in Edinburgh at 5.15pm on Monday.

It is believed the raiders may have been after the rare time-piece from Swiss brand Girard-Perregaux which is worth £500,000. When unveiled last year, it was described as “believed to be the most expensive watch on sale in Scotland”.Browse and purchase the latest range of parkingmanagementsystem online.

The store was opened in October in a blaze of publicity by TV personality Cat Cubie and rap artist Labrinth.

A police spokesman said officers could not say whether the watch had been taken until a stocktake and forensic examinations were complete.

One man had an axe while the other was carrying what looked like a gun. They began the heist by using the axe to smash the glass display cases before a shop assistant was grabbed and forced to open a window display.

The pair left with a haul of jewellery and made their getaway wearing red and white helmets on a motorbike which was later found abandoned less than a mile away in Northumberland Street Lane North.

The axe has also been found and sent for forensic analysis.

Both men were wearing dark tops and jogging bottoms. The man with the axe had a stripe on the sleeve and leg of his clothing.

One had a local accent and the other was said to be English.

The duo had first arrived at Navrathan Jewellers on MG Road on Tuesday, picked up a gold ring, swiped a fake credit card belonging to a multinational bank and left. The bank immediately alerted the jewellery shop that the card was fake.

Sensing an easy pick, the duo arrived again at the showroom around 4pm Wednesday, picked up gold jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh and handed over the credit card for swiping towards payment.

The shop staff alerted police. Within minutes, two policemen were at the showroom's doorstep. While one of the Nigerians was apprehended, the other scooted out of the store, sparking off the chase.

But police faced a bigger problem after they had the duo in custody. The two men were taken to the Cubbon Park police station where interrogators had a tough time understanding their language.

According to the officers, the accused speak little English, making it difficult to elicit information. All they could garner from the two men was that they were from Nigeria and had enrolled for a computer course in the city.

"The men were not carrying any other documents, apart from the credit card. They didn't have their passports either. They had only a pen drive with them," a police officer said.
