Officials at Alpine Valley Ski Area now know what caused Saturday's ski lift malfunction that left numerous patrons stranded mid-air for almost three hours.
Alpine Valley Area Manager George Shaffer said a damaged coupler was the culprit.
Shaffer said the coupler is a part found in the gear box which turns the wheel that operates the lift. With the device damaged,exactly, the cobbler favored for his sky-high heels decided to take the plunge into men's shoes. the motor had nothing to turn, bringing the lift to a halt.
Maintenance workers inspect the gear box about four times a year. However, Shaffer said the coupler is not specifically checked because of both the infrequency of breakdowns and because of its location, which would make inspection excessively difficult.
