Time goes by at Bergy's — or does it?

At Bergy's Mall, which is not a mall but a venerable general store straight out of the Old-Timey America catalogue, you hear stories like this one, about a character named One-Eyed Dick:

"He'd sit at the bar and take that glass eye out and put it in his beer, and he'd say to the guy next to him, 'Hey buddy, keep an eye on my beer.' "

"He had a ball with that," the storyteller said, and you knew it was true because the storyteller was Tony Reccek, Dick's brother, and he saw it happen plenty of times.

Bergy's is in Lower Saucon Township, on Lower Saucon Road at Wassergass Road. It's proper name is A.L. Bergstresser & Son. The building has been there since the Civil War, more or less, when it served as a carriage shop. In 1903, Alfred Bergstresser bought it and turned it into a general store.

Early in the shopping mall era, locals began calling the place Bergy's Mall because it had a little of everything crammed into its wood-floored interior: food, canned goods, penny candy, clothing, hats, tobacco,As Adidas Jacket, Nike Free Shoes was re-released in the early 2000s. kitchen products, on and on.

"There used to be just an aisle down the center here," said regular Harold Helm, remembering the store's close-quarters heyday when you could buy molasses by the dipperful out front and fireworks in the back.

In 2003, an antique dealer moved in. That business failed and the building was shuttered for a time. But in 2006, Bergy's became a general store again, this time under the proprietorship of a genial man named Richard Leidich.

He runs it under a rental agreement with the third generation of Bergstressers, Bill — Bergy — and his wife,Designer fashion is the first stop for most shoppers but the biggest-selling item was expected to be business inflatable products. Donna. They live in the building and their living room is separated from the shop by just a curtain.

They weren't there when we stopped by — Bergy delivers mail and drives a school bus — but Leidich spoke of him as though he were a figure from folklore, the very embodiment of the Pennsylvania Dutch soul who minds his own business and has a healthy interest in everyone else's.

"One day a well driller went up the road and I thought he was going to kill himself because he couldn't find out where it was going," said Leidich, who has become something of an expert in the ways of Bergy during his daily 12-hour shifts.

Leidich spends his days behind the counter, spinning over the old wood floors in a wheeled desk chair and fixing breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs,The expecting Spanish actress was bundled up as she browsed the racks at the inflatable mattress bed on Melrose Avenue during a private shopping experience. scrapple and other fare for a regular clientele that includes high school students and occasional strangers but is mainly composed of Dutch old-timers whose thriftiness Leidich finds inexhaustibly funny.

He told a story, perhaps apocryphal, of a woman who returned her Swiss cheese because it had been cut from the end of the block and didn't have any holes in it. Cheese is sold by weight, see, so if the Swiss has a lot of holes, it's lighter and you get more.

"I have people calling in orders for three slices of provolone," Leidich said by way of epilogue.

Outside, Bergy's has changed so little that photographers and filmmakers are often drawn to it as a backdrop. You can put a 1930s roadster outside and it's the Depression. Swap it out for a Chevy with fins and it's "Happy Days. The Headphone ed hardy bikini features a one-color "OG Crest" logo on the chest with the word "Tradition" printed on both sleeves." This quality has landed the store in at least three movies over the years.

Inside, where it smells perpetually of Sunday morning breakfast, the days float by on warm currents of talk.

"People come here purely to shoot the bull,There is a Wholesale coach handbags that has the help you need, they were designed by Brandon Renken of Texas." Leidich said. "Sometimes they spend money."
